Shining A Light on Daughters During the DAR Million Members Celebration

It’s all about YOU! While it was a thrill to surpass one million members since our founding at the beginning of this month, I hope that you continue to enjoy the DAR Million Members Celebration that honors all of our members. Thank you to all of the Daughters and chapters that have taken part by celebrating their members past and present in ways large and small. But let’s not stop now – let’s continue to tell the world about who we are and what we do in order to demonstrate the vitality and purpose of our National Society. Here’s an overview of the campaign and ways that you can still be involved:

Share Your Chapter Members’ Stories Locally

While we have been highlighting DAR members’ stories on the National DAR website and social media platforms this past month, we also encouraged you to do the same in your community via your chapter’s social media platforms or through your local media. We created a template news release that your chapter can use to spread the word about DAR’s historic milestone while also highlighting members from your own chapter. The news release has been downloaded more than 1,000 times so we are excited that many of you have participated in the campaign on your local level to celebrate the stories of your members and are encouraging other eligible women in your area to join your chapter. Great job – thank you!

Here are just a few examples of how this outreach was used to promote DAR:

Emory Road Chapter in Knoxville, Tenn., used the news release template to highlight two members in their chapter. Their Million Members chapter news release won coverage in one of their local newspapers despite the typical past challenges they experienced getting exposure for DAR programs. But this unexpected outcome also had an added bonus: a letter from an 83-year-old woman who was a 1954 graduate of Tamassee DAR School. She shared that the newspaper story brought back wonderful memories of her time at Tamassee and the DAR members she met through the school. She was writing to thank them for the education and the memories. Wow! What a difference we make in the lives of so many people – most of whom we may never meet again.

Here are some other examples of great coverage that chapters received using the Million Members Chapter Template News Release:

Fort Cooper Chapter, Florida – Citrus County Chronicle

Boonesborough Chapter, Kentucky – Richmond Register

John Guild Chapter, Missouri – Southeast Missourian

Capt. Joshua Gray – Jonathan Hatch Chapter, Massachusetts – Cape Cod Today

Dona Ana Chapter, New Mexico – KRWG Public Media

Did your efforts result in coverage as a result of the Million Members Chapter Template News Release? Please share it with us at We want to feature successful media placement on the Million Members Celebration – Local News Coverage section of our website. Please visit the page for inspiration on seeking out news coverage for your own local chapter – I hope that you, too, will share the story of your local Daughters in order to attract other vibrant women to our work.

Today’s Daughters Profiles

I hope that you have liked and are following the DAR National Headquarters Facebook page so that you can receive all the latest posts highlighting the stories of some of our members featured in the Today’s Daughters member profile in American Spirit magazine. You can watch short video vignettes on these interesting members and read more about their stories on the Million Members Celebration website in the Get to Know Today’s Daughters section. Here are just two inspiring examples:

Make sure to follow along on the DAR Headquarters Facebook page or check back to the Get to Know Today’s Daughters section as more videos are released. We are so proud of the women who have sustained our National Society, and I hope that you will join me in celebrating their myriad contributions.

Daughters of Distinction Profiles

We have also been sharing photos and profiles on the DAR National Headquarters Facebook page of some of the fascinating past members who have led distinguished lives. You can view photo galleries of these members at the Million Members Celebration website in the Learn Where DAR Began section. Outstanding women in the fields of law, performing arts, military, philanthropy, writing, and business have been profiled. I am certain that you will be proud to know that you share membership in a Society that has included such illustrious Americans as its members.

Member Testimonial Videos

One of my favorite parts of the DAR Million Members Celebration has been watching the touching testimonial videos that so many of you posted. More than 125 members submitted videos expressing why DAR is so important to them and why they are proud to be one in a million. If you haven’t yet watched these videos of your fellow Daughters telling their personal stories, I encourage you to do so. And if you haven’t shared your own video yet – there is still time! Please post your own testimonial video on the Facebook page so we can celebrate YOU and share your story with others. We will be making compilation videos at the end of the campaign to spotlight all of the members who submitted their videos and we want to make sure to include your story, too.

DAR Facebook Advertising Campaign

It is exciting to share that this month we also launched our first nationwide Facebook advertising campaign celebrating our million milestone in order to raise awareness of DAR and to attract new women to our mission. We created a series of Facebook advertisements, which appear as “sponsored” DAR posts on Facebook, to attract the attention of women who may not yet know much about DAR but who we hope will become interested in joining. The ads are another way we can create excitement and interest in membership in our vibrant and relevant organization. Please remember that increased interest means new names will be added to the Prospective Member Database (PMD) on a daily basis, so please ensure that your chapter is promptly responding to the women who express interest in order for us to capitalize on this important promotional campaign.

Shine On!

The DAR Million Members Celebration has been an inspiring reflection on the DAR members who carried forward our mission for 129 years AND the members of today who continue to ensure that our important work continues. Please remember that we must always “shine,” i.e. keep telling the story of our amazing members and the incredible work that is carried out by our Society in order that the public can truly appreciate the impact that DAR members make on their local communities.

I hope the DAR Million Members Celebration has helped you to feel immense pride in your membership. Let’s take the excitement and joy of our Million Members Celebration and shine a light on the bright future of our organization as we fulfil our important mission for America. Thank you for being one in a million!
