The NSDAR Archives is proud to present a new online resource for DAR history research – the DAR Reports to the Smithsonian Institution

When the DAR received its Act of Incorporation in 1896, it stipulated that the National Society submit an annual report to the Smithsonian Institution for the U.S. Congress. While the Proceedings from Continental Congress fulfill this obligation now, from the DAR’s inception in 1890 until 1974 a special condensed report was created and sent to the Smithsonian.

These reports contain the DAR’s Act of Incorporation and lists of the National officers and the Board of Management. They also contain a summary of the work of the NSDAR, including brief reports of the Continental Congress’ proceedings and public recognition of the National Society. The reports list the State regents and the work of the chapters in different states and they include the annual reports of the National Society Children of the American Revolution.

Another fantastic aspect of the Smithsonian Reports is their inclusion of illustrations, such as photographs of DAR memorials and awards received or given by the DAR.

These reports will be an invaluable tool for researchers both near and far.

Tips for their use: Utilize the table of contents and index located in each volume. Your computer’s search function will also help to locate key words or proper names within each volume.

Where to find the Smithsonian Reports

The Smithsonian Reports can be found on both the public DAR website (from the Collections tab at the top of the page, click on Archives, then Resources) and on the Members' Website (hover over the Forms tab at the top, then NSDAR History, click on Reports to the Smithsonian Institution).
