Spending Time with Family at the Ranch
Spending Time with Family at the Ranch
Congress was so much fun! Truly, an army of volunteers and staff worked countless hours to make it successful and their hard work paid off. Thank you to all who worked, all who attended and to our marvelous headquarters staff!
Since then, I have relished the opportunity to be with family the last few weeks. Our grandsons, Cade (6 years) and Jake (4 years) spent a couple of nights with us at the ranch. The boys call my husband “Boots” and they call me “Honey”, thanks to a Name That Grandma Fundraiser at DAR. Although we didn’t have as many opportunities to ride the big tractor and bulldozer as they wished, they stayed quite busy looking for all types of critters. We quickly learned that Jake is not fond of grasshoppers (just as we are in the midst of a plague of them) and that Cade is an expert at spotting deer. Cade loves to drive our utility vehicle and both boys enjoyed cooling off in the water sprinkler. The boys were highly amused to watch a walking stick crawl on me.
After visiting a neighbor who is raising ducks, chickens and show pigs, they spotted jackrabbits on our way back to the house. The little jackrabbits freeze when they think they’ve been spotted, tuck their long ears in and try to disappear. Jake worried someone had eaten its ears and I assured him it was not chocolate like the candy bunnies, but that he was only trying to hide.
The rancher across the river has a few llamas and the boys were surprised to see them getting a drink early in the morning. They pulled a couple of ears of dried corn and when a road runner crossed our path, they exclaimed “beep, beep” like the Bugs Bunny cartoon.
We met Lindsey in Brenham, home of the famous Blue Bell ice cream. Trust me, anyone who has ever lived in Texas knows about Blue Bell! Lindsey let me give Campbell her first taste of ice cream and even she is eager for more. Next time I’ll celebrate National Ice Cream Month with their new Red, White and Blue Bell. Too bad that will not count as Celebrate America hours!
