CONSTITUTION WEEK...Just around the corner!

Adele Lancaster, National Chair, Constitution Week

Already, many of you have:

  • Arranged to receive proclamations from local city / town officials.
  • Worked with public and school library staff to set up displays.
  • Contacted local businesses with outdoor marquees to “advertise” Constitution Week.
  • Set dates to visit classrooms to talk about the purpose and content of the Constitution.
  • Completed the major tasks associated with community events and are down to the smallest details.

With only a little over a month to go – three weeks if you want to promote the Constitution the entire month of September – what else can you do? Or, if it’s not a matter of “What else?” but, rather, “What can we do at the last minute?” Think about:

  • Contacting a church/other preschool or after-school care program to ring bells September 17 at 4:00, Eastern time. (Bells can be purchased at wedding supply stores, craft/hobby stores, or online.) Add a tag to the bell and send it home with the student:

You rang this bell to commemorate

  • Preparing a Constitution Minute for your September chapter meeting.
  • Including the Preamble in your Opening Ritual… every month and on special occasions.
  • Adding an article to your chapter newsletter that gives the history of Constitution Week.
  • Ordering additional supplies from the DAR Store: Constitution Week certificates for special presentations; posters to present to mayor/city council when accepting the proclamation; Preamble bookmarks to take to the classroom when you visit or to give away when you encounter store clerks, wait staff at restaurants, medical professionals… whomever you meet during Constitution Week. (Order now. The staff will see you get things in time!)
  • Getting your Constitution Week garden flag ready to display during the month of September… or order one from the DAR Store if you didn’t purchase yours last year.

Too, if you haven’t already, promote the Constitution Week Poster Contest with Daughters and community artists. Go to the committee’s website pages (Awards and Contests) for instructions and entry form. Deadlines are listed there. Artwork is done and submitted in 2024/judging is done in 2025. National winning poster goes on sale in June 2025.

Note: There are many resources on the Constitution Week Committee Website: Sample Proclamations, worksheet activities for children, Constitution Minutes, Spot Announcements, articles to share, website links to additional resources. If you need inspiration, most likely you will find it there. Or on the DOC! Daughters ask questions and share ideas.

Everyone can do something! Start with something simple. Let your passion for our Constitution and your commitment to promoting its importance and content guide your celebrations. Then watch how the impact of your efforts can make a difference and lead to Celebrating Stars and Stripes Forever!
