What's New in the Genealogy Guidelines?

Amanda Taylor, Assistant Director of Applications, DAR Genealogy

The Genealogy Guidelines Parts 1, 2, and 3 have been updated. What has changed, you ask?

The majority of the changes made in the April 2023 update are not new; they are merely updated reflections of policies and procedures that have been made by the Executive Committee of the Wright Administration or by the Registrar General’s Department since the last update. However, as part of this update, all three Guidelines were reviewed, re-formatted, re-paginated, and, when necessary, edited to remove repetitive information or to clarify existing details. In addition, all hyperlinks were checked and updated. All changes appear in red with the notation “Updated Apr 2023”. To find all the updates quickly, press CTRL + F on your keyboard and type in the word “Updated”. You can use this same feature to find any word or topic within the publication.

More specifically, in November 2022, Part 1 was updated to reflect the following:  Committee reorganization (pp 3, 47, 48), the 2022 PDF form/endorsers’ signatures now optional (pp 5, 6, 19). In April, additional updates include: fee increase for photocopies/documentation requests (p 17), addition of the Daughters Online Community to the Social Media section (pp 24, 25), Updated email addresses for the Office of Organizing General (pp 36, 37), new procedures regarding image access (p 39), and the time limit for review of Supplementals (pp 1, 8, 11, 28).

In December 2022, Part 3 of the Guidelines was updated. There were only three minor additions: a list of acceptable sources for those who participated in the Boston Tea Party (p 11), an explanation of Martha’s Vineyard service issues (p 30), and a caution about using Bockstruck for Georgia service (p 67). In April, aside from the changes to the formatting and pagination, no additional updates were made.

Part 2 of the Guidelines was a larger undertaking. In an effort to condense and clarify information, some sections were removed or edited, however, because these edits do not reflect new information, they are not being mentioned or notated in red. The main updates to Part 2 include: edited statement to match p 1 of 2022 PDF (p 1), changes to image access (p 4), updated documentation fees (p 6), reworded Build-an-App directions (pp 14-15), changes to image access (pp 27, 28), explanation of Jr/Sr designation (p 29), no pre-letters for previous PDF forms update (p 42), endorser’s signatures now optional (pp 45-47, 95), review of Supps strongly recommended (p 48), avoid using X as placeholder for first names (p 48), use of XX per Application (p 48), reminder about Gen 1 BC naming BOTH parents (p 50), Supps returned in one year vs two (p 105), extensions may be requested for Supps (p 107), addition of ATF, Specialty Research Committees (p 112).

Again, the majority of these ‘changes’ are not new, they are merely updates to ensure that all information presented in the Genealogy Guidelines is as current and accurate as possible. Thank you for your patience with the revisions and your dedication to the Society. Happy researching!
