Unique Private Events at DAR Headquarters

Susan Blankenship, Events and Meetings Manager

One of the lesser known departments at DAR Headquarters is Events.  The Events Department coordinates internal Member and departmental space reservations and also provides substantial income for the organization through private rentals, the majority of which are weddings. We are proud of our growing relationships with corporate and non-profit clients, from neighbors down the block to investment leaders such as Charles Schwab and Intesa SanPaolo, the largest bank in Italy.

Most events are traditional cocktail receptions and seated dinners, but there are times when we host the unexpected. These special moments are best shared through images.

In August, DAR served as “base camp” over four nights for the DC filming of Steven Spielberg’s latest film, “The Papers”.  Here is a shot being set at the 17th Street entrance, complete with cars from the 1960’s.  The film, starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, focuses on The Washington Post’s coverage of the Pentagon Papers and will premiere in late December.

An early spring wedding was an elegant affair complete with fine china, beautiful flowers, and live trees in the Library and O’Byrne Gallery.  After sunset, the guests were wowed when the Washington National’s Presidential Mascots joined them on the Portico dance floor. Thomas Jefferson had some smooth moves!

The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Travel Bureau brought Florida to Washington DC in June.  There were ocean vistas and blue “waves” superimposed on the floors and walls of the O’Byrne Gallery and Portico, old fashioned taffy pullers, and dancing to island music late into the night.

This October, a young couple decided to forego the traditional reception dancing and had an inflatable drive in-style movie screen installed on the 17th Street side of the Portico, strategically in line with the White House. The featured film was “An American President”, and guests enjoyed traditional movie fare while cuddled in blankets.

Savvy brides book prime months more than two years in advance to insure their dream wedding at DAR. Take a look at our reviews on The Knot, Wedding Wire, and Washingtonian, where we have the distinction of being named “2017 Top Wedding Venue”.  Better yet, drive by the Portico on a beautiful spring, summer or fall Saturday evening and witness our happy clients and their guests in action!
