I am honored to announce that National Defense Night will feature two distinguished speakers! We are delighted to welcome Vice Admiral Michelle Howard, US Navy, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans & Strategy and General Norton Schwartz, US Air Force (ret.), Former Chief of Staff of the US Air Force.

Vice Admiral Michelle Howard is the first female to be selected as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations. She is also the first African-American woman to achieve three-star rank in the US Armed Forces and the first African-American woman to command a US Navy Ship, the USS Rushmore. She is slated to be promoted to Admiral on July 1, 2014, becoming the US Navy’s first female four-star admiral.

General Norton Schwartz is the former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. He served as the senior uniformed Air Force officer responsible for the organization, training and equipping of 700,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian forces serving in the United States and overseas. General Schwartz also served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and was a crewmember in the 1975 airlift evacuation of Saigon.

We are also so pleased to have LTG Claude Kicklighter, USA (Ret) join us during this special evening to speak about the Department of Defense Vietnam 50th Anniversary Commemoration Program. The National Society and a number of chapters are official Commemoration Partners and I strongly encourage all chapters to join in this effort to honor our nation’s Vietnam Veterans. You will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with representatives and learn more about the Commemoration Program at Celebrate America Night on Friday at the Hyatt.

National Defense Night will also feature award presentations for members of our nation’s military and veterans along with those who support them. The Margaret Cochran Corbin Award for Distinguished Women in Military Service and the Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee Award for the Army Nurse of the Year will be presented. Other awards of the evening include the Outstanding Veteran Volunteer of the Year, the Outstanding Youth Volunteer of the Year and the Outstanding DAR Service for Veterans Award.

I am looking forward to honoring all of these deserving award winners during our National Defense Night Ceremony.
