Watching the news coverage of Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey has been heartbreaking. How does someone get through such devastation? Our thoughts and prayers are with the many DAR members living in the areas affected, as well as the millions of others who have had their lives upended by this tragedy.
We have received many inquiries from concerned Daughters across the world expressing their desire to help and asking what we as the DAR can do. The National Society is not equipped to provide direct disaster relief through financial aid or care packages, but there are many relief organizations that are working to help those affected with rescue operations and long term recovery work. We suggest that monetary or other item donations are best made through existing organizations that you respect and that are accepting donations for Harvey relief.
We know the recovery process will be long for the entire region and all of the families trying to get back on their feet. We will stay in close touch with the State Regents of the areas affected to ensure that our members and chapters in the area are safe.
While DAR is certainly not on the forefront of the minds of those members affected by the storm at this moment, DAR National Headquarters will be available to help those affected chapters with DAR administrative needs when the time comes. Any chapters needing assistance with administrative challenges due to disruption caused by the storm are encouraged to contact the Office of the Organizing Secretary General.
Thank you, Daughters, for your concern and offers of help to those in need. We will continue to keep our thoughts and prayers with those that are affected during this difficult time and encourage our members across the country to support them during their recovery.
Sincerely,
Ann Dillon
President General
