Looking Toward the 125th Continental Congress

This year during our annual convention we will celebrate another amazing milestone in our Society’s history, the 125th Continental Congress! It was actually during this month, in February of 1892, when DAR held the 1st Continental Congress. This year’s Congress will be filled with celebrations of past Congresses and I am sure we will create our own special memories for the future. If you have not yet made plans to attend the 125th Congress I hope you will do so today; it is not one to be missed! I am excited to share some details about this Congress and what members can expect.

Credentialing and registration information for Congress was mailed to your Chapter Regent and they should be receiving it shortly. If you plan to attend Congress and would like to pre-register, please contact your Chapter Regent. The pre-registration fee is $40 for a member and $15 for a guest. The on-site registration fee is $50 for a member and $20 for a guest.

The Tentative 125th Continental Congress Schedule is now available to view online and can also be found in the March/April Daughters newsletter. The schedule includes tentative times and locations for the important committee, club and state events taking place throughout the week of Congress as well as the various social events and information on how to make reservations. There will be special end of the administration events as well as festivities to honor the 125th anniversary of our annual gathering, so make sure to check out all that will be happening. The tentative schedule will continue to be updated online leading up to Congress, so please check back to the Members’ Website for new information.

I am so pleased to share that in celebration of the 125th Continental Congress, members have the opportunity to purchase a personalized commemorative certificate of the occasion. This would also make a great gift for friends or family who are DAR members. You can learn more about the commemorative certificates and use the online order form to secure yours here: www.dar.org/members/125certificates.

A very special project that will take place during this Congress will be focused on attempting to set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM title! Our goal is to collect the “Most letters to military personnel collected in one month” and to set the title we must collect at least 10,000 letters. You can start collecting these letters right now from your chapter, family, and those in your local community, but it is important that you must bring them all to Congress (or give to a member who is attending) or else the letters will not count towards the record. There are very strict rules we must follow so please visit www.dar.org/worldrecord to learn how you can participate.

I am so impressed by your continued dedication to our nation through your inspiring volunteer work in your communities. One of my favorite parts of Congress is getting the opportunity to honor that work at Celebrate America Night. I am looking forward to another wonderful evening filled with some new surprises.

I am very excited to announce that genealogist Mary Tedesco will be a featured speaker at Celebrate America Night. Mary can be seen on Genealogy Roadshow (PBS), and is the founder of ORIGINS ITALY, a firm specializing in Italian and Italian-American genealogical and family history research. Mary is also a member of the DAR and I am so pleased to be welcoming her to this great event. I love Celebrate America Night and I look forward to celebrating with you all again!

As we get closer to Congress, I hope you all will remember to regularly check the Members’ Website for Congress information.  Recently, lots of new Congress information has been added.

  • There are still a small number of hotel rooms available at our convention hotel, the Grand Hyatt and a list of additional hotel options can be found here.
  • Invitations to serve as a Page during the 125th Congress were sent via email in this week. Please see the paging section of the Congress website for more information.
  • Sign up your loved ones for this year’s Event for Men and Families!

I hope these updates will help you make your plans for Congress this year. I cannot wait for the wonderful events of the 125th Continental Congress and to welcome you all to Washington, D.C.!
