Let’s Sparkle Together in Service at the 133rd Continental Congress!

Jamie Burchfield, National Chair, Service to America Committee

The 133rd Continental Congress is quickly approaching, and we are excited to share details about our fun and fabulous Sparkle in Service Committee Showcase on Friday, June 28 from 7-9:30 pm at the JW Marriott. This interactive and informative event is come-and-go with no tickets or RSVP needed to attend. Dress in business or cocktail attire and enjoy a fun night with your DAR friends!

We will kick-off our evening with our Service to America Service in Seconds and Day of Service Award Presentations, followed by special award presentations by the Franco-American Memorial committee. The Service to America committee will offer a micro-presentation: “More than card-writing: Simple Service Projects.”

Have you ever considered enrolling in the DAR Education Training courses but just haven’t found the time? Or are you currently enrolled in one and want to knock out a module while you’re at Congress? The DAR Leadership Training committee will be offering an overview of the New Horizons, Members, and Committee Leaders courses throughout the night:

  • 7:15 pm – New Horizons overview and complete the Vice Regent workbook
  • 8:00 pm - Members Course overview and the Today’s DAR module
  • 8:25 pm – Committee Leaders Course overview and the I said Yes! Now What? module

You’ll be able to take your completed work home with you and turn it in should you enroll in any of the courses in the future.

During the evening you will also be able to interact with 50 DAR committees and community partners in the main ballroom. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about committee’s important work and new ideas for chapter activities! Make sure you grab your Sparkle Passport on the way in to collect stamps from the tables you visit. Once you’ve completed your passport you can pop in the Service to America welcome station so that you can enter giveaways for fun DAR Store and Insignia prizes drawn throughout the night!

We will also have a few service opportunities during Sparkle night. As we conclude our Education-focused Annual Project, we will accept book donations for Books 4 Kids. Anyone who brings a book to donate will be entered into a drawing to receive a Little Free Library for your community! Worried about not having enough room in your suitcase or encroaching on that 50 lb limit at the airport? No problem! We also have an Amazon Wish List onsite to support the Twin Buttes Elementary School in Halliday, North Dakota. This school, which serves the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Three Affiliated Tribes on the Fort Berthold Reservation, experienced a catastrophic flood over the 2022 Christmas break, which destroyed more than 80% of the books in their school library. Purchasing books from this Wish List during Sparkle Night will also give you an entry to win the Little Free Library!

To kick off our third Service to America Annual Project based on Patriotism, we will write cards to active-duty military and put together care packages for the Honor Guard for each branch of the military that provides support for funeral services through the Joint Base Myer Henderson Hall in Arlington, VA. We’ve created a Wish List for supplies needed for the care packages, you can purchase here:  https://shorturl.at/Cma4j

Make sure to stop by our Service to America Service Station to log your Service to America hours. Everyone making an entry that night will be entered into a drawing for fun DAR Store and Insignia prizes! Help us meet our new goal of 17.76 million hours logged during the Wright Administration! Also take a moment to send a note of gratitude to a DAR mentor and friend at our gratitude station. We’ve created a special postcard that will be mailed after Congress.

There’s something for everyone at Sparkle in Service Night (including a cash bar) and we can’t wait to sparkle with you!
