Independence Day in the Nation's Capital

July 5, 2013

What a delight it was to participate in the Fourth of July parade in our nation’s capital!  The DAR members and guests walked down Constitution Avenue passing by the National Archives, Smithsonian Museum, Washington Monument and the White House, enthusiastically waving flags.  The Washington Monument was a dramatic and patriotic backdrop to the viewing stand facing the south lawn of the White House. Led by members carrying the DAR sign, the Flag of the United States of America and the DAR banner, the newly installed Executive Board waved flags and led a large group of members carrying the Betsy Ross Flag. Thank you to everyone who marched with us, it was a joy to have you.

The Executives thoroughly enjoyed their first official event wearing our new Celebrate America! shirts, white cowboy hats and white pants.  It was indeed a great day to Celebrate America! and all the privileges of freedom which we hold so dear. The most touching part of the day, however, was watching the tens of thousands of people celebrating our nation’s birthday and being so very grateful to live in America.  The crowd enthusiastically cheered as the DAR came into sight, fully aware that it was our ancestors who fought for our freedom.  May we never forget that the freedom we cherish is because of those who bravely served the patriot’s cause.

I hope each of you enjoyed your Independence Day! We would love to hear how you Celebrated America! on our nation’s birthday.
