Dedications and Educational Opportunities at Congress

Lynn Young, President General

Yesterday was a great first day of Congress week! There were many productive meetings and a lot was accomplished. This morning I participated in a wonderful wreath laying at the Washington Monument in honor of our 125th anniversary.

If you are interested in learning more about our wonderful DAR Library and how to use its resources, I encourage you to attend the DAR Library orientation this morning in the O’Byrne Gallery at Headquarters. DAR Library Director, Eric Grundset will be giving an introduction to all things DAR Library.

This morning I will welcome the Come and Take It Chapter from Texas, winner of the 2014 Spread the American Spirit Subscription Contest, to the President General’s Reception Room.  Come and Take It Chapter organized in 2013 under the leadership of organizing regent Pamela Marshall, who served as DAR Magazine Committee National Chair from 2010-2013. By encouraging all members to subscribe, and also giving gift subscriptions to friends, family members, prospective members, and local schools and libraries, the chapter recorded a subscription percentage of 307 to successfully defend its 2013 subscription contest title! The President General’s Reception Room tour is part of the contest’s new grand prize package, which crowns the winners the Rock Stars of the DAR Magazine. The winning chapter also gets the chance to serve as guest editor of the November/December 2015 issue of American Spirit magazine by suggesting a feature story topic and selecting the magazine cover. Work to increase your own chapter’s subscription percentage and you could claim these fabulous prizes next year!

We will have dedications today for the newly restored Banquet Hall in Memorial Continental Hall which was sponsored by the North Carolina Daughters and the updated Welcome Center in the Administration Building which was sponsored by the Florida Daughters. Thank you to these members for contributing to these efforts to improve our Headquarters.

This afternoon I will be participating in the Gift Acceptance Ceremony. This will be such a wonderful opportunity to meet with these donors and to thank them for their tremendous gifts to the National Society.

Later today I will be stopping by the California Congressional Tea, the State Regents Club Dinner and the National Vice Chairmen’s Association Annual Meeting, the South Carolina Dessert Extravaganza and attending the Illinois Summer. I am excited to greet many members at these events.

I hope those of you attending the Washington Nationals baseball game tonight enjoy it! Be sure to keep your eye out during the President’s Race for the DAR members! If you are interested in attending the game there is still time to get tickets. Learn more here.

I hope those attending Congress have safe travels Washington, D.C. I am looking forward to greeting everyone during tomorrow evening’s Opening Night Ceremony!
