The DAR Museum Celebrates Women’s History Month

Katie Cannon, DAR Museum, Curator of Education

March is Women’s History Month, and the DAR Museum has joined the commemoration by highlighting not only the achievements of many women in American history but also the objects in the DAR Museum collection that were made by women.

All of the programs are offered live through the internet, so you can participate from anywhere!

Looking to the Ladies: Engaging Women of Louisiana
Tuesday, March 9, 12:00 p.m. (Eastern)

William Strollo, Curator of Exhibitions, will highlight recent changes in the Louisiana Period Room featuring some of the more notable contributions women made in the state’s history. Come, learn more about these remarkable individuals and their treasured objects held in the DAR Museum collection.

This lecture will be offered live through Zoom and registration is free; you may also watch it streaming live on YouTube. Can’t make it? It will be recorded, and the recording will be archived on the museum’s YouTube channel to enjoy when it fits your schedule.

Historical Tea: Votes for Women!
Saturday, March 20, 2:00 p.m. (Eastern)

What was it like for the women of the 1800s who fought for rights equal to men, only to be denied? Get a peek into their lives through objects in the DAR Museum collection while you chat with your friends during this interactive virtual event! Come with your favorite beverage and get ready to cheer with the suffragists as the United States heads toward ratification of the 19th Amendment that (finally) allows women to vote.

This event features a special guest appearance by none other than Madam C.J. Walker, successful businesswoman and supporter of women's suffrage! It will be conducted through Zoom. Tickets are $5; for more details, see the event page.

Women Making History… One Object at a Time
Ongoing in March

Throughout the month of March, DAR Museum educators will present live virtual tours that highlight objects made by women. Celebrate these female artists, authors and tradeswomen of American history!

The tours are free, last about 30-45 minutes, and participants are able to ask questions and interact with the tour guide. They are conducted through Zoom; see the full schedule and register here.

Check the museum’s calendar of events for more exciting events and programs. As always, this programming is made possible, in part, by your generous donations to the Friends of the DAR Museum Fund. We hope to welcome you to our next virtual event!
