DAR’s Partnership with America250

Lynn Young, Honorary President General, America 250 Commissioner, National Chair, America 250! Committee

I am very excited about the recent announcement that DAR is the first lineage society to be recognized as an official partner of the America250 Foundation, the nonprofit partner of the official United States Semiquincentennial Commission! The Foundation recognizes the efforts of DAR to honor the men and women who achieved American Independence since our founding in 1890.

On a personal note, I am confident I was selected to serve on the Federal Commission because of the vast network of DAR chapters who are eager to promote historic preservation, patriotism and education in their own communities. I am deeply grateful to each of you as well as the National Society for your support. From the beginning of the Commission’s establishment in 2016, DAR has offered to help any way we can. In March 2019 DAR hosted the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission meeting in which we heard from the late Senator John Warner about lessons learned from the Bicentennial celebration, which he chaired.

DAR has agreed to continue with the excellent work by chapters, state societies and the National Society to inspire the American spirit with meaningful activities and outreach to the public. As you know, DAR established the America 250! Committee in 2017 to encourage chapters and state societies to begin planning for the upcoming milestone anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. DAR is still in the internal phase in which we encourage chapters to build capacity to attract and process the throngs of prospective members we anticipate. Soon DAR will enter the external phase in which chapters and state societies should begin considering special projects and commemorative events to raise awareness of the upcoming 250th anniversary and to encourage the public to research their own family history. It is not too soon  for your chapter to begin planning highly visible projects and events. We are less than 4-1/2 years away!

Per our agreement with the America250 Foundation, DAR agrees to:

  • Continue promoting the commemoration of the Semiquincentennial and the sharing of ideas and activities for planning commemorative activities
  • Donate the use of Constitution Hall to the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission for a special event in 2025-2026
  • Complete the Pathway of the Patriots by planting 250 trees in a historically significant area as a gift to the nation
  • Continue to encourage the placement of America 250 Patriot Markers across the United States
  • Tell the story of underrepresented and diverse Patriots who helped win the American War of Independence through the E Pluribus Unum Educational Initiative
  • Encourage the recognition of nonmembers and groups who demonstrate extraordinary efforts to raise awareness of Revolutionary War Patriots and/or America’s 250th anniversary through the DAR America 250! Committee.
  • Offer a Patriots of the American Revolution High School Essay Contest for 9-12th grade students focusing on individuals, both famous or unknown, who figured in the events of the American Revolution (1773 – 1783).
  • Share information with our members on the America250 Foundation programs, when appropriate.

In return, the America250 Foundation grants NSDAR the right to use the official America250 logo on our website and printed materials and the America250 Foundation will promote the activities of NSDAR on their website. Please note: chapters may not use the official logo of the America250 Foundation.
