The Legacy Program

The Legacy Program was created in May 2020 to encourage prospective members to take the easiest pathway to membership. If a prospective member is connecting to an established lineage within the first three generations, and if she is applying under the same patriot as her mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, etc., then she can qualify for Legacy status!

Here are some examples of how the Legacy program works:

  • If you joined the Society under John Smith A123456, your daughter should use the same ancestor for her membership application. When your daughter’s application is verified under John Smith A123456, then both you and she will have qualified for Legacy and will be eligible to purchase the Legacy pin!
  • If you are a member of the NSDAR and your sister is interested in becoming a member, then she should join through the same ancestor as you. When her application is verified then both you and she will be awarded Legacy status.
  • Your grandmother was a member of the Society who passed away 20 years ago. When you applied to the Society 10 years ago, you used her application to become a member. While your grandmother will not qualify for Legacy as she is deceased, you can qualify for retroactive Legacy status designation and can purchase the Legacy pin!

These are just a few examples of how the Legacy Program works. For more information, please visit the Legacy Program webpage on the members’ site. There are certain requirements that must be met, and certain stipulations that must be considered, when attempting Legacy status. As such, for any questions please contact [email protected].

For retroactive Legacy status designation, members may contact the Legacy inbox at [email protected]. To request Legacy via email, please include your name and national number in your email. Queries will be researched as time allows so please be patient.

The Inheritance Project

The Inheritance Project was approved by delegates at the 130th Continental Congress in June 2021 under The VanBuren Administration as a member benefit that allows Daughters to “inherit” Patriots for whom their mothers or grandmothers have a proven Application or Supplemental Application.  The Inheritance Project removes the need for a full four-page submission with documentation for each Patriot and reduces the cost to “inherit” all eligible Patriots for a one-time fee of $50.

Please note that Inheritance does not constitute or convey membership. You must be an active member to apply for Inheritance. No current Supplemental Applications may be withdrawn in order to take advantage of the Inheritance Project.  At this time, the Inheritance Project is limited to mothers and maternal grandmothers only.

Members who are interested in inheriting Patriot Ancestors via the Inheritance Project should first visit the webpage on the members’ site. Please read the requirements carefully as there are specific eligibility requirements.

Daughters who wish to inherit their mother’s or maternal grandmother’s Patriots complete an online form and pay a $50 non-refundable processing fee. Inheritance will be established using existing approved Applications and Supplemental Applications. Once authorized, a member will be notified via an automated email and the Genealogical Research System will be updated.

Once your Inheritance has been approved, please note that your national number will not appear on that Ancestor’s profile. Rather, your member record in the GRS will be updated, click here to see what it will look like.
