Announcing the DAR Book Club

Cynthia Sweeney, Librarian General

It is a joy for me to introduce an exciting new way to celebrate Our Patriots and raise awareness of the men and women who achieved American independence.  We’re thrilled to launch our new DAR Book Club, which will feature nonfiction titles focused on the Colonial through the Federal periods. For the 2019–2020 year the following books have been selected: Rush: Revolution, Madness, and Benjamin Rush, the Visionary Doctor who Became a Founding Father by Stephen Fried, and Jefferson’s Daughters: Three Sisters, White and Black, in a Young America, by Catherine Kerrison. Both of them were finalists for the 2019 George Washington Prize.

The DAR Library staff will soon be posting additional information on the books, quotations, interviews and sample discussion questions via the DAR Library Facebook page: www.facebook.com/NSDARLibrary. All chapters are encouraged to participate and even organize their own local events. This is a fun and informative way to share our history and honor the Patriots who founded our nation.

The DAR Library encourages current and former state and chapter librarians who have run book clubs to share tips and tricks for other DAR groups (states and chapters) on the DAR Library Facebook page. This could be a great opportunity, especially for state and chapter librarians, to network and share ideas with each other during the course of the national book club program.

DAR Members who are attending DAR Continental Congress will also have the opportunity to enjoy the inaugural DAR Book Club Tea on Tuesday, June 23. We’re delighted to announce that both authors will be attending the event! Information about tickets and registration will be announced as we get closer to Congress. Can’t make it? The Q&A session will be recorded and highlights will be shared for members who aren’t able to attend in person.

The DAR Library, located in the historic DAR National Headquarters building in Washington, D.C., contains more than 200,000 volumes of books, periodicals, microfilm and other genealogical information, including DAR databases and other subscriptions which can be accessed online: www.dar.org/library. We welcome your online and in-person visits, as well as your participation in our new DAR Book Club.
