Our New Digital Magazine Has a Name!

Ginnie Sebastian Storage, President General

In late January, the DAR Magazine Committee asked our members to share ideas for naming the new digital magazine that will make its debut in July and replace our print American Spirit magazine and Daughters newsletter. More than 650 ideas were submitted, and there were many strong suggestions. (The DAR Magazine Committee will share more information about the states and chapters submitting the most names with its Continental Congress report.)

However, one stood out, and the Executive Committee is pleased to announce our selection: The Daughters’ Portico.

The Daughters’ Portico was inspired by a name suggestion submitted by Neale Grisham, a Junior member of the Emily Nelson Chapter in Washington, D.C. A portico is a threshold—a gathering spot before entry. It implies hospitality and conversation. Our physical portico at Memorial Continental Hall is described as a “premier, neoclassical event space featuring a covered rotunda, 13 iconic marble columns representing the original colonies, and panoramic views of the Washington Monument.” It is a “showstopper space” that has caught the attention of Hollywood, countless brides, and generations of Daughters. It is timeless.

Naming our new digital publication The Daughters’ Portico is an homage to this space. Not only does “portico” pay tribute to our Patriot ancestors through the symbolism of the 13 columns, but it also invites Daughters of all ages and all membership tenures to come inside the National Society, learn more, and get more involved. Reading the new digital magazine should feel like enjoying a glass of iced tea on the portico with a good friend. Our content will be welcoming and invite friendship and dialogue.

This new digital publication is our space as Daughters to tell the ever-growing, ever-evolving story of our timeless contributions to the United States of America. We are excited to share more information about The Daughters’ Portico at Continental Congress and send you the first issue in early July.
