Keep the Momentum of Literacy Promotion Going All Year!

Lorilee Short, National Chair, Literacy Promotion

As we wrap up national Read Across America Week, we celebrate the joy of reading and the volunteers, educators, librarians, and community leaders who help open the world of books to children and adults alike. Literacy is more than a week-long celebration — it is a lifelong gift and a cornerstone of opportunity.

For DAR members, supporting education and literacy has always been central to our mission. This week serves as a powerful reminder that even the smallest act — reading to a child, donating a book, mentoring a new reader — can spark confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Now is the perfect time to ask how can we keep this momentum going all year long? Below are ways our members and chapters across the country continue to champion literacy beyond this special week. Whether your chapter is large or small, there are meaningful and manageable ways to make a lasting impact in your community. If your chapter is looking for a purposeful service activity, consider adopting one of these ideas:

  • Implement, Support, and Promote Literacy Projects
Develop or partner on initiatives that support both children and adults. Consider hosting a book drive, organizing a reading day at a local school, or launching an ongoing literacy awareness campaign in your community.
  • Donate Books and Magazines
Collect and donate new or gently used books to; Local daycaresElementary schoolsWomen’s sheltersCommunity centersAccess to books at home is one of the strongest predictors of reading success.
  • Sponsor a “Little Library”
Establish or maintain a neighborhood Little Free Library to encourage book sharing and community engagement. It’s a simple yet visible way to promote literacy daily.
  • Volunteer Your Time. Read to a child in a classroom or library setting. Serve as a reading buddy or tutor. Teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult learners. Personal connection often makes the greatest difference.
  • Support Summer Reading Programs and Strengthen Community Partnerships
Partner with local libraries or schools to encourage reading during summer months when students are most at risk for learning loss. Provide books, incentives, or volunteer support. Literacy advocacy grows stronger when we work together. Partner with DAR committees, schools, libraries, and other groups to expand your reach and amplify impact.
  • Participate in Literacy Promotion, Community Classroom & Library Outreach Committees. Support classroom literacy efforts and engage in DAR initiatives that bring books and educational resources directly to students and families.
  • Promote Commemorative Literacy Events. Shine a light on important dates, such as National Family Literacy Day on November 1, by requesting a local Literacy Promotion Proclamation or hosting a chapter recognition event.

Keep the Light Shining
Read Across America Week may conclude, but our commitment to literacy continues. By reaching into our communities, forming partnerships, and celebrating those who champion reading, we ensure that literacy advocacy remains vibrant all year long. When we illuminate literacy, we illuminate brighter futures. Let’s keep reading. Let’s keep serving. And let’s keep illuminating the power of words.
