February is a month of celebration and reflection as we observe Presidents’ Day and honor the birthday of George Washington. I have been deeply honored to participate in several meaningful events this month that pay tribute to the steady leadership, courage and character that helped give birth to our beloved country. On Wednesday, February 11, I was invited to attend and offer remarks at a wreath laying at the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C. in honor of George Washington, Father and First President of the United States of America. On Saturday, February 14th, I had the distinct privilege of serving as a Grand Marshal of the oldest and largest George Washington Birthday Parade in the country in Alexandria, Virgina. Each of these events uniquely honored George Washington’s life, character and enduring influence.

The wreath laying at the Organization of American States

The wreath laying at the Organization of American States, located just across C Street from DAR Headquarters in Washington, D.C., was particularly meaningful to me. Gathering with representatives and dignitaries committed to democratic ideals reinforced the lasting global influence of George Washington. In my remarks, I reflected on the 294th anniversary of his birth and on the enduring legacy of our nation’s leaders. I spoke about the remarkable influence of his mother, Mary Ball Washington, whose strength, integrity and resilience helped shape the character of the man who would lead a revolution and a young nation. From her, he learned responsibility, perseverance and service—traits that guided him through the challenges of war and the weight of the presidency.

On Saturday, February 14, the celebrations continued in joyful fashion as I was honored to serve as Grand Marshal of the 2026 George Washington Birthday Parade in Old Town Alexandria, alongside the SAR President General, Michael Elston. Hosted by the City of Alexandria’s George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee, this cherished parade is the oldest and largest of its kind in the nation held in Washington’s adopted hometown. With the 2026 theme, “Virginia’s Son ~ America’s Founding Father,” the parade beautifully highlighted his pivotal role during this milestone 250th Anniversary Year. Riding near the front of the parade route, I was deeply proud to represent DAR.

Prior to the parade start I was honored to participate in the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary Soldier at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House.

Prior to the parade start I was honored to participate in the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary Soldier at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House. This event reminded us of the sacrifices made by Patriots like George Washington, and what they had to endure that allows us to celebrate them today.

As America prepares to mark 250 years of independence, these commemorations remind me that George Washington’s legacy is not simply something we remember—it is something we carry forward. Through service, unity and a renewed commitment to our founding principles, we ensure that the promise of America endures for generations yet to come.

They have reminded me that George Washington’s legacy is not confined to history books—it lives on in the hearts of patriots today. They remind me to reflect upon the principles George Washington championed—duty, perseverance and devotion to country. As we celebrate his birthday, we also look ahead with anticipation to United States Semiquincentennial—America 250. In honoring George Washington today, we help ensure that the spirit of 1776 continues to inspire new generations as our nation prepares to commemorate 250 years of independence. The ideals he instilled at the founding—selfless service, unity, courage in the face of uncertainty and faith in the promise of liberty—remain the foundation upon which America continues to stand.
