Upcoming Plans for an Exciting Restoration of the DAR Library

Holly Blair, Librarian General

As many of you know, the work that began under Pamela Wright's Administration to restore our beloved Memorial Continental Hall has continued during the Storage Administration. I'm pleased to share with you that the next phase of this project will begin this summer. Starting after Continental Congress in July of 2026, we will begin restoring our historic DAR Library.

After Congress concludes, the DAR Library staff will move operations into the Seimes Technology Center.  We will begin packing the contents of the Library in July. This does include the entire book collection, which for safety and preservation will be moved to off-site storage for the duration of the project. We expect the project to take at least twelve months, so this will be a long period of time that the book collection will be inaccessible. Please keep in mind the staff will not have access to the book collection during the restoration period either.

I understand that this may be a challenge for some working on research at the DAR Library, but the Seimes Technology Center will remain open throughout the project with the same Monday through Saturday hours. Anyone who needs access to online resources, including record copies, supplementals, or anything else on the GRS website will be able to continue their work online, and in the fall our new enhanced Library research portal goes live!

If you have questions about your ongoing research projects and what your options are to get things done before July, please contact the Library staff at [email protected]. More information and FAQs on the restoration work can be found here: www.dar.org/LibraryOnTheMove

With the Library book collection being moved offsite during the restoration, our dedicated staff in the Library and Genealogy departments are doing their utmost to ensure the review of papers continues with little to no disruption.

We are all very excited to restore our historic DAR Library to its original splendor and complete the important preservation work on Memorial Continental Hall. We are so grateful for your support of the DAR Library over the years. We will keep you updated on the restoration work here on the Today’s DAR Blog, via the Library Outreach Committee on the Daughters Online Community (DOC), and through the Library's Facebook page, which is @NSDARLibrary.
