First Generation Pin Introduction

First Generation Pin

The Insignia Store announces the availability of the First Generation DAR Member pin for all eligible Daughters. The pin is actually a bar worn on the official ribbon, which recognizes members who were the first in their family to join the Daughters of the American Revolution.

To be eligible, a DAR must have joined the Society prior to either of her grandmothers’ memberships, or prior to the membership of any of her four grandparents’ descendants. She also must have joined prior to her own descendants’ memberships (daughters, granddaughters, or great-granddaughters). If members are eligible using these criteria, they may also be eligible if they joined DAR simultaneously with a relative, such as a mother, sister, or daughter. National numbers are often consecutive in cases of simultaneous membership, but do not need to be.  Simultaneous members must apply separately for First Generation pin purchases.

If you believe you are eligible to purchase the First Generation DAR Member pin, you must first complete the verification form online. The form may also be accessed via the online Insignia Store, the Insignia Committee page, or the Application Verification Support Committee (AVS) pages on the DAR members’ website. The First Generation pin verification and approval team is led by the National Vice Chair – First Generation as part of the AVS Committee. AVS team members will review all applications, then notify submitters of approval or ineligibility by email. If approved, the Insignia Store will be notified within two weeks of application, and the pin may then be purchased. Members or gift-givers must wait for emailed authorization from the NVC-First Generation prior to purchase.

DAR has compiled a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list to help members determine if they are eligible to wear the First Generation pin. A common question is whether a member might qualify for both the First Generation pin and the Legacy bar. The answer is yes, because often a family’s first DAR member will assist their own relatives to become future members, and thereby create their own family legacy.

The Insignia Committee wishes to thank the members of the National Board of Management for testing the pin’s eligibility and verification process last month, and thanks the Wright and Storage Administrations for acknowledging our First Generation members. The First Generation DAR Member pin allows Daughters to convey that they, too, are creating DAR Legacies in Bloom.
