Illuminating Our Legacy Through DAR Scholarships

Paula Stolebarger, National Chair, DAR Scholarship Committee

As we celebrate a year of milestones and prepare for our nation’s 250th anniversary, we are excited to announce that the DAR Scholarship application portal opened on November 1 for the 2026 award year!  We need your help to spread the word about our national scholarships offered by the DAR Scholarship and American Indians Committees. The online application portal, DAR AcademicWorks, will remain open until January 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. (Hawaii Time).

Through the DAR Scholarship Committee, we continue to Illuminate Our Legacy by supporting students who represent the next generation of leaders, innovators, and community builders. Last year alone, the committee awarded scholarships totaling more than a quarter of a million dollars, proof that the light of learning illuminates brighter each year thanks to the generosity and dedication of our members.

Honoring America 250! with Ten Scholarship Awards

In celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary, we are thrilled to expand the America 250! Scholarship awards. For 2026, ten one-time awards of $25,000 each will be awarded to students currently majoring in American History at accredited educational institutions.

Recipients must be United States citizens, prove a minimum 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale or equivalent), and submit a one-page essay on either the founding of our nation or their personal volunteer achievements for community and country. This expanded scholarship reflects DAR’s enduring commitment to patriotism, education, and service, core values that continue to guide our Society.

A Spectrum of Opportunities

In addition to the America 250! Scholarship, our committee administers more than two dozen scholarships supporting students in medicine, nursing, science, education, law, music, English, horticulture, and other fields. Some are renewable for up to four years, offering continuing support as students pursue their degrees.

Spotlight on The Robert Hunter Swadley Horticulture Scholarship

Please help us promote one of our most specialized scholarships: the Robert Hunter Swadley Horticulture Scholarship. Open to California residents only, this scholarship supports a graduating high school senior majoring in horticulture at any accredited institution in the United States. The award amount of the scholarship will be determined each year based on the income generated by the principal of the fund. This is a remarkable opportunity for students pursuing a future in horticulture.

How You Can Help

Our state and chapter chairs are the heart of our outreach! Please:

  • Share the DAR Scholarships Information Flyer (Form SCH-WP-1004) in your communities, including schools, libraries, chapter members, neighbors, etc.
  • Encourage applicants to review the Application Instructions and Checklist for help on how to organize and complete their online application and encourage them to apply early!

Together, we are brightening futures, honoring our nation’s heritage, and ensuring that we continue to Illuminate Our Legacy—one student, one story, one scholarship at a time.
