As I conclude my term as First Vice President General, I am filled with gratitude and pride for the meaningful journey I have experienced during the Wright Administration. Serving alongside President General Pamela Edwards Rouse Wright and the other Executive Officers has been an honor, and I have been continually inspired by their dedication and vision. The theme of this administration—Celebrate Stars & Stripes Forever, Rejoice in our DAR Ties of Service and Friendship—has truly resonated throughout every initiative and achievement.
Reflections from the Executive Officers: First Vice President General
One of the six guiding goals of our administration was to take time to recognize and appreciate our National Society Staff. Our staff are the heartbeat of our organization, and their commitment ensures that the DAR mission of historic preservation, education, and patriotism thrives. As Chair of the Human Resources Committee, I had the privilege of working closely with my fellow Executive Officers and our Human Resources Director to launch one of the Wright Administration’s first initiatives: a comprehensive review of our organizational reporting structure.
After an extensive search and careful interviews with several consulting firms, we enlisted Evans Consulting to conduct an in-depth analysis of the NSDAR headquarters’ structure. Our objectives were clear: to evaluate the existing organizational structure; to ensure our structure promotes efficiency, two-way communication, continuity of operations, staff development, and succession planning and to foster a sense of connectedness between the Executive Committee and NSDAR employees, facilitating positive change and effective decision-making.
The review process was thorough and inclusive. We conducted an all-employee survey and held preliminary staff interviews, followed by additional interviews with members of the National Board and national chairs. The findings were delivered to the Executive Committee, sparking extensive and thoughtful discussion.
Since the Wright executives took office in June 2022, we have made significant strides toward our goal:
- Implemented a new organizational structure to enhance communication and efficiency.
- Hired a new Executive Director to lead our talented staff.
- Conducted a comprehensive salary review and made adjustments to ensure our compensation is competitive with other workplaces in Washington, DC.
- Hired three new Senior Directors and promoted two others, investing in leadership and continuity.
- Appointed a new Head of Finance to strengthen our financial stewardship.
As our term in office concludes, I feel confident the organization is structured for success and I am pleased with the great strides that have been made.
I have also had the pleasure of serving as executive liaison to five National Committees—America 250!, Kathryn West National Chair; Children of the American Revolution, Vicki Voris, National Chair; Continental Congress, Connie Olde and Melissa Wetzel, National Co-Chairs; Junior Membership, Jennifer Pond and Sarah Brooks, National Co-Chairs and the Long Range Planning Commission, Samantha McAnulty, National Chair. These outstanding women were creative and thoughtful in their work in fulfilling the mission of not only their committees but the National Society. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with this group of exceptionally talented Daughters.
The progress we have made together is a testament to the power of teamwork, vision, and a shared commitment to our mission. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve and for the friendships and partnerships that have enriched my experience. As I leave office, I do so with confidence in the future of our beloved National Society and with a heart full of joy for the journey we have shared.
Let us continue to Celebrate Stars & Stripes Forever, Rejoice in our DAR Ties of Service and Friendship today and always.
