Reflections of the Recording Secretary General

Lanabeth Horgen, Recording Secretary General
Wright Administration

As I reflect on my three years as Recording Secretary General, I feel honored and grateful to have served during the Wright Administration. It has been a joy to serve under President General Pamela Rouse Wright. Collaborating with Mrs. Wright and the Wright Team was both inspiring and rewarding. Together, we achieved remarkable accomplishments for the National Society. Multitasking defined my tenure, fueled by abundant energy and a low tolerance for boredom—traits that served me well!

The Office of Recording Secretary General achieved the following:

  • Executive Committee meeting minutes were prepared and archived;
  • In addition to in-person meetings, organized weekly Executive Committee Zoom meetings to do the business of the National Society;
  • National Board of Management reports and minutes were compiled in comprehensive and abbreviated formats for the Members’ Website and Daughters newsletter;
  • National Society rulings were recorded in a searchable database;
  • Executive Committee electronic votes were administered, and board meeting notices were sent to National Board of Management members;
  • Annual updates to national committee reports and forms were made for the National Information Packet (NIP);
  • Yearly updates were made to the Chapter Master Report (CMR);
  • Updated instructions for Vice President General, Honorary Vice President General, and Executive Office candidates were sent upon request;
  • Signed Certificates of Endorsement for Vice President General were received and filed;
  • Candidates were guided through the election process, from form completion to ballot order drawing;
  • Annual Proceedings of each Continental Congress were compiled, proofed, edited, and sent for printing and distribution. Electronic and hardbound copies were sent to the Office of the Reporter General who sends them to the Smithsonian Institution.

My sincere gratitude goes to Edith Rianzares, Director of Printing and Publications, Victor Kunze, Director of Information Systems, and MaryGrace Arlotto, Assistant to Recording Secretary General for their diligent work; and to National Parliamentarian Beverly Przybylski, PRP, for her invaluable guidance.

It was a privilege to serve as Executive Liaison to five outstanding national committee chairs: Elizabeth Steward Garner (American Indians), Linda Sehrt (Bylaws), Patricia Hatfield (Consistency in Messaging), Adele Lancaster (Constitution Week), and Dawn Lemongello (DAR School).

As my term concludes, I express sincere gratitude for the privilege of serving under the leadership of President General Pamela Wright, alongside the distinguished and capable women on the Executive Committee whom I now regard as friends. This experience has been profoundly rewarding, and I will hold these memories close to my heart always.
