Reflections from the Executive Officers: Historian General

Suzanne Heske, Historian General

What an adventure, what a journey! The people I’ve met, the places I’ve gone, and the things I’ve seen give me pause as I reflect upon our shared histories, stories, and purpose. As your Historian General, I am filled with gratitude for the Daughters across this great nation and abroad, and the dedicated staff who assist in bringing history to life.

The accomplishments within the Office of the Historian General during the Wright Administration are numerous, as are the successes of the exceptional national chairs of the committees with whom I liaised: American Heritage (Kim Zeman), American History (Janet Westbrook), DAR Today Podcast (Brooke Stewart), Historic Preservation (Liz Hotchkiss), and Literacy Promotion (Allison Holland).

Where it began in Washington, D.C., it shall end! As we swiftly approach the Semiquincentennial of America, I reflect upon the depth of service and dedication demonstrated by our Daughters. We have approved almost 700 Revolutionary War Grave markers, placed nearly 200 Historical/Commemorative markers, dedicated 254 America 250 Patriots markers, and installed over 25 Revolutionary America 1775-1783 road signs.

Significant highpoints accomplished within the Office of the Historian General during this administration include erecting a mission statement marker prominently displayed on a 17th street pillar of Memorial Continental Hall, making accessible digital online Proceedings of the National Society, 1910-2021, and digitized the DAR Marker and Grave Location Index. We published the 3rd edition of the Wide Blue Sash, annually celebrated National Marker Day, April 28th, researched and created a video highlighting DAR’s contributions to our military during the Vietnam War titled “Honor & Respect: Remembering our Vietnam Veterans,” with the help of Jacqueline Leahy, Bren Landon, Joy O’Donnell, Brooke Stewart, and Jason Hornick.

One of the greatest joys of serving as Historian General has been the opportunity to accept numerous invitations from across the country, delivering remarks and keynote addresses to honor soldiers, Patriots, and Real Daughters, offering inspiring words to members and the community during America 250 Patriots Marker dedications, celebrating significant anniversaries, and disseminating historical knowledge and education.

Thank you Madame President General and Daughters for the opportunity and honor to serve the National Society. It has been a wonderful learning experience and adventure, with memories and friendships to last a lifetime. May we all continue to go out and do great things in service of DAR!
