Salute to the Stars and Stripes!

Marria Blinn, National Chair, The Flag of the United States of America Committee

The Salute to the Stars and Stripes! Flag Replacement Chapter Grant Program was established to provide a free 3’ x 5’ American Flags from the DAR Store to DAR chapters across the nation to ensure that worn or tattered flags in their communities were replaced with dignity. This Flag of the United States of America Committee initiative allows chapters to engage in a meaningful way, fostering patriotism and community involvement while educating the public on proper flag protocol. Whether replacing a tattered and faded flag or placing a new American flag on an empty flagpole, DAR members have been reviving patriotism and providing hope and unity across our nation. Many inspiring stories have come to light as a result of the Flag Replacement Chapter Grant program. Here are just a few:

  • For their recipient, Ester Reed Chapter (WA) chose Pine City Cemetery, with burials dating back to the 1800’s, as the cemetery was devastated by wildfire in 2020, and all funding has been focused on land restoration since that time.
  • The Elks Aidmore Children’s Center helps children and families in crisis and the Sergeant Newton Chapter (GA) was delighted to support them by providing a flag grant to replace their faded and tattered flag.
  • Campo Verde High School Air Force JRROTC’s flag suffered wind and sun damage and receiving a flag grant from the Cactus Wren Chapter (AZ) was heartfelt by the instructor and cadets.
  • The Flagg Township Museum, listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and built in 1884 as a City and Town Hall, was grateful to receive a flag grant from Rochelle Chapter (IL).
  • The Abraham Sally Chapter (FL) provided a flag grant to Celebration High School to replace a weathered flag, with leadership from the Air Force JROTC and the local C.A.R. President being present.
  • The Taneycomo Chapter (MO) combined a Flag Replacement Chapter Grant and an America 250! Grant to create a Never Forget Garden with an American flag, supporting veterans at the GUMI (Glad You Made It) Camp as they find peace and healing.
  • A 93-year-old Korean War Army veteran whose flag was in dire need of replacement received a flag grant from Sashabaw Plains Chapter (MI).
  • The Price Rotary Senior Center received their flag grant from the Massanutten Chapter (VA) who donated the center’s first flag and flagpole to them in 1977, honoring the legacy of Mr. Price and his wife, a DAR member since 1927.
  • Since 1833, the historic Zion Episcopal Church has symbolized its community’s heritage and spirit, and they appreciated receiving a flag grant from the Hudson River Chapter (NY) to replace their tattered flag.
