It's Time for the 2024 National DAR Day of Service!

Jamie Burchfield, National Chair, Service to America Committee

To celebrate 134 years of the DAR’s service to America, and the founding of our National Society on October 11, 1890, Daughters will take part in the National DAR Day of Service during the month of October. This is one of our largest, collective acts of service. In 2023, 1,976 chapters reported that they participated in a DAR Day of Service activity. Can we reach more than 2,000 in 2024? How will your chapter participate?

Service projects do not need to be elaborate or complicated, and you should keep in mind the physical and time limitations of your members when planning. There are many ways you can support our Mission of Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism! Your chapter could digitize chapter or community records, clean a historic property, or clean headstones or monuments and markers in support of Historic Preservation. You could donate books to local libraries or schools or read to students at a school or children at a local library’s story time in support of Education. Your chapter could support the DAR Annual Service Project by writing cards to veterans, active-duty military, and first responders or create care packages for active-duty military, veterans, or local shelters in support of Patriotism.

Your service project doesn’t need to be a stand-alone event and could make for a great addition to your October meeting program (our “Service in Seconds” initiative is perfect for that!). Also consider inviting prospective members, HODARs, and your local C.A.R. society to join in on the fun.

DAR is excited to be a Founding Partner with America 250’s new initiative America Gives. America Gives is a national effort to reinvigorate a year-round culture of service leading up to 2026. Our DAR Day of Service helps amplify efforts to promote volunteer initiatives leading into the 250th anniversary of the nation.

Once your chapter has completed your DAR Day of Service activity, there are a few things to do:

  • Be sure to share photos and a description of your service activity on social media using the hashtag #DARDayofService. Remember to make the posts public so that the National Society can share them on Friday, October 11!

  • Spread the word of your chapter’s service activity through your local media. We have created a Toolkit to help amplify the story of your chapters’ efforts in your local community. We have also created a Template News Release that you can use to fill in the specific information about what your chapter’s service activity was to help raise awareness of the great work you provide to your community.

  • Don’t forget to log your Service to America hours in the Online Tally! The Wright Administration has a goal of members logging 17.76 million hours of service during the three year term, and every hour counts to help us reach this goal. Last year, members recorded a new record of 7,190,537 hours. Help us surpass this record and beat the end of the year rush by catching up on all of your unlogged hours today! Log your service hours here

  • Enter the National DAR Day of Service contest. The contest is easy to enter and not only gives you the opportunity for recognition for your work but provides the committee with great information to promote to Daughters and others about the meaningful service our members are doing in their communities. You can find out more about the contest here. Deadline for entering the contest is January 15, 2025!

We can’t wait to see how your chapter sparkles in celebrating the 2024 National DAR Day of Service!
