I was thrilled to be able to gather with the Nebraska Daughters for their 122nd State Conference – they are certainly sparkling through all they do for DAR! I enjoyed a visit to the Great Platte River Road Museum and learned so much about Nebraska history. A special thank you to everyone who made my visit wonderful, especially Nebraska Honorary State Regent Ellen White and Molly O'Holleran for providing my transportation and Emily Shavlik, Magge Ebert and Rhiannon Hatcher for being my Pages. Nebraska’s 122nd State Conference, with a “Leave Your Legacy” theme, was held in Kearney, March 14-16, 2024.  There were a record 122 Daughters registered throughout the weekend.  It was an honor to host our President General, Pamela Edwards Rouse Wright, and our visiting State Regents—Susan Leininger from Ohio, Marguerite Fritsch from Pennsylvania, and Lorrie White from Wyoming.   Our guests were able to see the famous migration of the Sandhill cranes as they passed through Kearney and toured the Great Platte River Road Archway.

The theme of the Yankee Doodle Administration is “A Medley of Service:  Honoring Those Who Carried the Musket and Beat the Drum.”  Nebraska Daughters have honored our patriots with the placement of ten markers so far.  However, it has been said that what you leave behind is not engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.  Thus, the conference speakers focused on how our actions can make a difference.

Saturday’s speakers included State Regent Marcia Shavlik with “Yankee Doodle’s Legacy,” the story of the famous sisters from Scituate, Massachusetts, who saved their town because of lessons their father, a Revolutionary War drummer boy, had passed on to them.

The evening speaker was author Jeff McKenna, who wrote the book “Saving Dr. Warren . . . a True Patriot.”  His presentation focused on patriotism and recognizing that what our patriot ancestors left us was their American Spirit, and thus, we have a duty to always behave in ways that bring us together as a country.  A highlight of Mr. McKenna’s presentation was the depiction of a Revolutionary War Patriot passing his American Spirit to a modern-day Marine.

On Saturday, our DAR Good Citizen winner, Ruben Carney, shared his essay which focused on the timeless words in the Pledge of Allegiance.   Ruben has also been named the North Central Division winner!   The keynote speaker at Saturday night’s banquet was President General Pamela Wright and she spoke about celebrating our DAR legacy. Nebraska Daughters had the privilege to hold Mrs. Wright’s sparkly insignia while she shared the many ways in which we can “sparkle in service.”

We were excited to welcome the DAR Insignia Pop-Up Shop and Convention Photography for the very first time.  We recognized our DAR Leadership Training graduates, the chapters who have received 100% participation in the President General’s Project, State Outstanding Junior Heather Osnes, Outstanding History Teacher of the Year Alise Pape, Outstanding Chapter Regent Marilyn Woerth, Traveling Tap Shoe Award winner Ann Cox, and Minuteman award winners Mary Kay Bothwell, Diane Dice, De Williamson, Stephanie Thompson, Jen Miner, Marge Bader, and Glenda Irish.  During a Heritage Club and Founders Club reception, Mrs. Wright expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the philanthropic support that Nebraska Daughters have made to the National Society.

The Yankee Doodle Administration’s final State Conference was a smashing success because our Nebraska Daughters have truly sparkled all year long.  We look forward to continuing the legacy of the DAR.
