A Sparkling Year in Service to America!

Jamie Burchfield, National Chair, Service to America Committee

2023 was indeed a sparkling year of Service to America for Daughters across the globe! We are thrilled to announce that we set another new record for logging Service to America hours. We topped last year’s record 6.5 million hours by logging 7,190,537 hours! We are grateful for not only every hour of service each Daughter performs promoting God, Home, and Country but for the time you take to log these hours in the online service tally.

We are proud of our 45 State Sparklers who exceeded their state’s hours goals in 2023. This is up from 40 states in 2022! In addition to our hours logged record, we also achieved a new record in the percentage of chapters participating at 96.6%. This is incredible! States logged hours at unprecedented levels, with 28 states achieving 100% chapter participation. We will be recognizing our State Sparklers on the Service to America Facebook page and in our Daughters Online Community in the coming weeks.

To date, Daughters have logged more than 12 million hours of service towards our goal of 15 million hours of service during the Wright Administration (1.5 million hours of 2022 hours were logged during the previous administration). We are thrilled to announce that due to this tremendous effort, we believe setting a new goal is necessary. In anticipation of America 250, our goal now is to log 17.76 million hours during the Wright Administration!

How can you and your chapter continue the momentum of our Service to America success in 2024? Consider holding Service in Seconds activities and other chapter service projects throughout the year. Service together is a great way to bond with your fellow chapter members, prospectives, HODARs, and C.A.R.s! Offer to help chapter members log Service to America hours by setting up a “help desk” at your chapter’s meetings. This will help you beat the end-of-year rush and may introduce new participants to logging. All you need is a smart phone or tablet with internet! Familiarize your chapter with what does and does not count as Service to America hours. You can reference the list on the Service to America committee page. Please know that this list is not inclusive of all possible activities. We are constantly finding new ways for Daughters to serve their communities.

The primary questions to ask yourself is:

  1. Have you been paid for this activity? If yes, then it does not count.
  2. Is this activity political in nature, such as campaigning for a candidate for office? If yes, then it does not count.
  3. Is this activity an active form of service? If no, then it does not count. Simply attending meetings, watching webinars, or reading this blog does not count. Flying your flag, voting, and recycling your personal trash does not count.

Please also consider participating in our Annual Service to America Project. This year’s project, which will close in the week prior to Continental Congress, focuses on education. We are counting the number of books donated to public spaces and the number of people read to. To date, Daughters have reported more than 500,000 books donated and more than 114,000 people read to! Can we get to 1 million books and 200,000 people by Congress?

Don’t forget to share your Service to America activities on the Service to America DOC and email them to [email protected]. We are always looking to highlight the amazing work our chapters are doing in their communities. Let’s continue to Sparkle through Service to America in 2024!
