Pleasing Truths: Power and Portraits in the American Home

William A. Strollo, DAR Museum Curator of Exhibitions

In 1754, artist Lawrence Kilburn advertised that “all Gentlemen and Ladies inclined to favour him in having their pictures drawn, that he don’t doubt of pleasing them in taking a true Likeness.” Kilburn’s advertisement, loaded with meaning, is one of many examples of advertisements placed by artists in the 18th and 19th centuries to garner portrait commissions. This ad reveals a lot about his, and other artists, potential clients, and their desires for being represented on canvas.

The DAR Museum's 2023 exhibition, Pleasing Truths: Power and Portraits in the American Home looks closer at portraits, subjects, artists, and the context in which they were produced to understand how society valued power, personal leisure, and prescribed gender roles. This exhibition takes a deeper dive into the context and symbolism of early portraits to better understand the transmission of ideas and their impact on people over time.

Museum visitors have been touring Pleasing Truths since March and now everyone can visit the virtual exhibition from any computer or mobile device. The virtual exhibition launched in October and features images of all the portraits, prints, costumes textiles, and furniture pieces in the physical exhibition. Clicking on an image will give you more information on that object and allow you to see it a bit closer. Both the virtual and physical exhibits were designed and built by Riggs Ward Design.

Visitors to the virtual exhibition will also have the chance to build their own portrait using the Portrait Builder program. Portraits and other objects in the DAR Museum collection are available to you to make a truly unique portrait that can say a lot about the sitter. This program, funded by DAR member donations, has been a big hit in the gallery and can now be accessed online. Be sure to share on social media any portraits you build and use the hashtag #pleasingtruths.

And, if you still can't get enough of the great portraits in the exhibition, you can also purchase a copy of the exhibition catalog online, through the DAR Museum Shop. This exhibition catalog features all the portraits from the exhibit and three essays by scholars on topics related to portraits. Thank you to the Junior Membership Committee for funding the production of this catalog. Additionally, you can join us on Friday, November 3 for Pleasing Truths, Framing Identify: A Symposium. You can find more information and register here.

Pleasing Truths: Power and Portraits in the American Home is open through the end of 2023. If you can visit the DAR Headquarters in Washington, DC, please stop by to see the exhibit. The virtual exhibit will remain online after the exhibit closes. Visit the DAR Museum website to learn more about our upcoming exhibitions, programs, and more.
