Navigating the Many DAR Awards and Contests

Junelle Mongno, Reporter General

Since 1890, Daughters have dedicated themselves to the promotion of historic preservation, education, and patriotism through service to communities worldwide. Outside of service, DAR further promotes our mission by recognizing and honoring people who excel in those initiatives in their communities. The organization also understands the importance of recognizing and showing appreciation for members who spend hours volunteering for the good of their community, country, and for DAR.

There are so many awards in various categories, we thought it would be a great idea to put them all into a spreadsheet. The DAR Awards and Contests spreadsheet is a current list of NSDAR contests and awards that excludes grants, scholarships, and committee initiatives, which are created by national committee chairs to engage members and generally end with the administration of the President General.

A few important items regarding the spreadsheet:

  • The requirements listed for each award or contest are generalized. Please use information for the National Information Packet (NIP) or committee webpage for full requirements and instructions for each.
  • Awards that are bold and in red are special awards outside of those sponsored by the Office of the President General. No past recipient of those awards at the chapter, state, or national levels is eligible to be considered for another award from that list which includes DAR Medal of Honor, DAR American Medal, Founders Medals, Historic Preservation Medal, DAR History Award Medal, and NSDAR Conservation Medal.
  • The Alternative Awards column contains recommendations if the participant/nominee meets the requirements as listed in the NIP or committee webpage.

Tips on how to best view the information in the spreadsheet:

  • The spreadsheet is quite lengthy, and while scrolling you may not remember the purpose of each column. You may lock the header row (freeze pane) so that when you scroll down to view the rest of your sheet, the header row will remain on the screen.
  • The DAR Awards and Contests spreadsheet contains a lot of content, making it difficult to find information quickly. Making use of the filter tool can be used to narrow down the information, allowing you to view only the information you need.
  • Are you looking for a specific word in the spreadsheet but do not want to take the time to search by filter? You may do a quick word search.

We hope this list is helpful and yields several awards to members and non-members alike! I would like to thank Yvonne Liser for constructing the spreadsheet and helping with the blog. In addition to the spreadsheet on awards and contests, a webpage on the topic can be found on the Resources menu here
