The Arizona Fall Forum

Sallie Lovorn, Arizona State Regent

“I love you, Arizona; Your mountains, deserts and streams.” It was HOT in Arizona, but so lovely to see lots of old friends and make new ones as I visited with State Regent Sallie Lovorn and the Arizona Daughters at their Fall Forum! Special thanks to my Personal Page Emrie Tomaiko-Clark and Morgan Elliott for providing my transportation. What fun we had during the 60s themed dinner, I was thrilled to learn more about the projects of the AZ Daughters and see their work in action throughout my visit. Thank you for a lovely time in the Grand Canyon state! You are indeed amazing with a capital A and Z!

-Pamela Wright, President General

The Arizona State Society was honored to host President General Pamela Rouse Wright for a little “Arizona Dreamin’ in August.” Our weekend of DAR dreams shared by our President General included a dreamy 60’s themed Committees and Commemorative Events Dinner with presentations on service opportunities available through our committee work this year. A highlight of the evening was the Arizona Singers singing “Arizona Dreamin’” in 60’s-era garb.  Mrs. Wright was presented with a tambourine and flower to commemorate the event.

The feature presentation of the evening was “Celebrating Women in Significant Events of American History”. The Commemorative Events Committee Co-Chairs chronicled one woman’s participation in each of the events that their committee features. In honor of Women’s Equality Day, August 26, each Daughter present, including Mrs. Wright, cast a vote for the woman among those chronicled she would like to learn more about. The evening ended with Mrs. Wright’s surprise appearance at the State Chairs and Vice Chairs Club, where she told of her first state committee chairmanship.

On Saturday, Mrs. Wright participated in pictures after a presentation of a Medal of Honor and an Americanism Medal at the Americanism Brunch. She also relaxed and enjoyed a comedic skit about Insignia do’s and don’ts. Then, there were more pictures at the President General’s Project and Continental Congress Awards Assembly—to be precise pictures with 83 recipients receiving 228 awards. This occurred in a miraculous 35 minutes thanks to terrific pages and great reading by the state corresponding secretary!  Absolutely am-AZ-ing with a capital AZ for our great Arizona State Society!

The Sparkling DAR Strings added a touch of elegance to cocktail hour and formal pictures. Mrs. Wright gave an inspirational and informational keynote address on DAR through the years and received a $1,500 gift for her President General’s Project and a gold charm in the shape of the state of Arizona with the custom setting of an Arizona amethyst gemstone and an Arizona peridot gemstone. The weekend closed Sunday morning with the joy of good food and fellowship at the Heritage Club Breakfast and an Interdenominational Prayer Service. In recognition of Women’s Equality Day, August 26th, the weekend’s service project was a collection of donations to meet the needs of minority women in the Phoenix Women’s Shelter.

While with us Mrs. Wright learned of some of our DAR dreams including the purchase and placement of five historical interpretive panels to honor the WWII troops of color, WAACs & WACs, and Indian Scouts stationed at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Arizona which has been “at the leading edge of our nation’s defense since 1877.” She also learned about our support of the United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY Inc.) organization, headquartered in Mesa, Arizona, which serves tribal youth nationwide with online programs throughout the year and two in-person conferences during winter and summer.

Having Madam President General join us for some Arizona Dreamin’ on such a hot and humid August weekend in Mesa, Arizona was truly a DAR dream come true!
