Start planning for the 2023 Annual DAR Day of Service!

Jamie Burchfield, National Chair, Service to America Committee

Since the creation of the Service to America Committee (originally known as the Celebrate America! Committee), Daughters have logged more than 50 million hours of service! This is a true testament to honoring our Founders and their wishes to have a Society “founded on service.”

One of the largest collective acts of service takes place in October as we celebrate the founding of the National Society with the DAR Annual Day of Service. In 2022, 1,996 chapters reported that they participated in a DAR Annual Day of Service in the month of October. Can we reach more than 2,000 in 2023? Perhaps even 2,023?

Service projects do not need to be elaborate or complicated. Our Mission of Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism affords many opportunities for service! Your chapter could clean a historic property (perhaps a chapter house or other historic property in your community, or clean headstones or monuments and markers in support of Historic Preservation. You could participate in the Service to America Annual Project by donating books to local libraries or schools or reading to students at a school or children at a local library’s story time in support of Education. If mobility is an issue for your chapter members, consider writing cards to veterans or active-duty military in support of Patriotism.

You can plan your service event as part of your chapter’s October meeting program (perhaps a project that is “Service in Seconds”), or as a stand-alone event. Consider making it a collaborative effort and invite prospective members, HODARs, and your local Children of the American Revolution society to participate. The more the merrier!

The Service to America committee is pleased to offer a 50/50 raglan red and white shirt as a CustomInk fundraiser in support of the President General’s Project. The design of the shirt features the word “Service” four times in homage to the four Founders and Day of Service in script across the center and the DAR logo at the bottom. These shirts are unisex and are $34. Consider ordering a size down for a more-fitted look if you typically prefer women’s style shirts. The deadline for purchasing shirts is September 13 and the shirts will arrive by October 1. You can serve in style with your chapter at your DAR Annual Day of Service event in these shirts! Purchase here.

Once your chapter has completed your DAR Annual Day of Service project, don’t forget to log your Service to America hours in the online tally! The Wright Administration has a goal of logging 15 million hours of service, and every hour counts to help us reach this goal. Beat the end of the year rush by catching up on all of your unlogged hours today! You can log in here.

Be sure to also enter the DAR Annual Day of Service contest. The contest is easy to enter and not only gives you the opportunity for recognition for your work but provides the committee with great information to promote to Daughters and others about the meaningful service our members are doing in their communities. You can find out more about the contest at the Service to America webpage. Deadline for entering the contest is January 15, 2024!

We hope that you and your chapter will sparkle in Service to America through the DAR Annual Day of Service this year!
