April 28 is National Marker Day!

Suzanne Heske, Historian General

Please join the National Society Daughters of American Revolution in a service-oriented celebration of National Marker Day, April 28, 2023.

Daughters have demonstrated for 132 years, our unwavering dedication and service by erecting and marking historical and commemorative events, by placing grave markers at locations where Revolutionary War soldiers, Patriots, wives, daughters, and Real Daughters rest. To date, DAR has placed well over 177,000 of these markers! Yes, these endeavors speak to our mission of Historic Preservation and Education within our communities.

Ask yourself, when did you last visit that marker the chapter or community established or dedicated five, ten, twenty, or even fifty years ago? As America’s 250th Birthday quickly approaches and spring is upon us, consider visiting these locations of distinction to ensure our markers sparkle, are beautiful, and are in stellar condition. These markers provide essential education, enhance visitors’ experiences, and preserve our country’s history and allow us to partner with local communities to ensure the condition and appearance continue to be inviting and visually pleasing.

What better way to show your pride in our beautiful and informative DAR historical markers than to provide some TLC to the ones that are a little dirty or need some minor repairs?

National Marker Day was founded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation in 2021. See https://www.wgpfoundation.org/national-historic-marker-day/ for the history of the event, instructions for registering, planning and participating in National Marker Day. You will find a list of Pomeroy markers in your area that may need attention and you can download the volunteer kit which includes the following:

  • Elementary School Lesson Plan
  • Jr and High School Lesson Plan
  • Kid friendly Activities
  • Marker Cleaning Guide
  • Plan Your Service Project Tool
  • Sample Press Release
  • Tips for Contacting Media

Consider joining us for a service-oriented event on April 28th, here at National Headquarters, to clean the markers located on the DAR property. Meet us at the D Street entrance at 10am if you would like to participate. Afterward, we’ll share photos and ask you to share yours with us on the Chapter Historians Community hosted by the Historian General on the Daughters Online Community.

So, get your DAR friends together and join us in a little marker maintenance!
