Meet Your Executive Officers - Curator General Susan Metzger

Susan Metzger, Curator General

I have heard that life is shaped by a few transformative moments that define our character, priorities, relationships, and our futures. They may seem small at the time, but their impact is significant. For me, the day I met Terry Healy in our town library to sign my DAR membership application opened up a world of friendships and opportunities I could never had imagined.

My DAR journey started quickly when I took on the role of Recording Secretary for my chapter. Since joining in 2005, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as Chapter Regent, District Director, several State Offices including State Regent, and as National Vice Chairs and National Chairs for VIS, Leadership Training, and DAR Good Citizens.

As a daughter of an Army Veteran, I was born in California while my dad attended the Defense Language Institute, spent my youngest years in Munich, Germany, and then landed in Northern Virginia when my dad retired from service.

Virginia is where I went to college (University of Mary Washington for undergraduate and Old Dominion University for graduate school) and where I started my career (environmental consulting). Then another one of those life-altering moments happened, I went to a work training and met a handsome man from Council Grove, Kansas. I moved to Kansas a year later and have been in the Sunflower State and married to that man ever since.

Another transformative moment is the day Pamela Wright asked me to join her sparkling team. I still pause in awe of this opportunity to work side by side with some of the most talented, kind, funny, and hard-working women I have ever met. My fellow Executive Officers may disagree, but the role of Curator General is the best. My role is to help everyone discover ways to enjoy and support one of the finest collections of American decorative arts in the country. I hope you will join me and our dedicated DAR Museum staff for Tuesday Talks and will make plans to visit the fascinating exhibitions planned for the next three years.

When I am not at work or at a DAR event, I can be found working out, hiking and traveling with my husband, or at a K-State football or basketball game. Thank you for this amazing opportunity to serve as your Curator General as we Rejoice in Our Ties of DAR Friendship and Service!
