Delve into Revolutionary Era Genealogy and History at the AAHGS Conference

Pamela Wright, President General

Next week, the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) will be hosting its annual conference (held virtually this year) with a Revolutionary War era theme: “Bridging the American Colonial Divide: Resurrecting the Memory and Space of Black Patriots and History Makers.” DAR is proud to be a Platinum Sponsor for this year’s AAHGS Conference, and so pleased that several DAR members will be giving presentations.

The AAHGS Annual Conference is the largest international African American conference that promotes African-ancestored family history, genealogy, and cultural diversity by bringing together subject matter experts who promote scholarly research, provide resources for historical and genealogical studies, create a network of persons with similar interests, and assist members in documenting their histories.

Sessions that will be of particular interest to our DAR members include presentations on Colonial and Revolutionary War genealogical records, historical contributions of Black Patriots, and discovering unknown family relationships through DNA. Keep an eye out for presentations by some of our own DAR members including Shelley Murphy, Nicka Smith, Jonnie Brown, Karen Sutton and Yvonne Liser!

DAR will also have a virtual exhibit booth for conference registrants to learn more about our organization and about DAR membership. Conference participants can reach out for more information about joining the DAR via the virtual booth or through the email [email protected]. DAR Specialty Research Committee Vice Chair of African American Research, Reisha Raney, will be working the virtual booth to provide information and assistance connecting prospective members from the conference with DAR member volunteers to help with the DAR Application process.

Visit the AAHGS Conference Website for more information and  please note that registration for the conference is open through October 15. For those who can’t attend the virtual sessions live, registering for the conference by October 15 will give you access to the virtual attendee hub where you can replay the sessions through the end of December at your leisure.

Whether or not you’re able to participate in the AAHGS Conference, you can also take advantage of DAR resources to learn more about African American Patriots of the American Revolution.
