Meet Your Executive Officers - Librarian General Cynthia McNamara

Cynthia McNamara, Librarian General

I know that I’m prejudiced, however, as Librarian General, I think I’m the most fortunate Executive Officer. As a voracious reader, college history major and lover of all stories about families, what could possibly be more rewarding.  Additionally, it seems a bit of lagniappe that the very first Librarian General, Dr. Anita Newcomb Magee, was a Mississippi Daughter, too!

As a newlywed, I had the incredibly good fortune to move to Laurel, a beautiful town in south Mississippi. Yes, it’s that “Home Town” now made famous by HGTV. Laurel was settled in the late 19th century, by sons of timber barons from Clinton, Iowa.  They came with their wives already members of the fledging new society, known as the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

There they formed a new DAR chapter and set about making a difference in Laurel and the DAR Mississippi State Society.  When a member lost their only child in 1921, she built an elegant library in his honor and filled it with complete sets of colonial records from all thirteen colonies, ship manifests, maps, historic papers and family histories.  It was a treasure trove for a potential new member. Some of my happiest hours were spent there researching for a possible ancestor.

Once invited to join the chapter, the Nahoula daughters were incredibly supportive and quickly assigned me to committee chairmanships, had me paging at State Conference, District Meetings, and Congress. Then they began pushing me up the chapter officer chain.  Six years later, I was so honored to become Chapter Regent.

Throughout my 43 years of membership, I’ve been honored to work on many NSDAR and Congressional Committees, serving as National Chair on several.  A real blessing has been the very dear friends that I have around our DAR world.  Now, as a charter member of the River of Pearls Chapter, I’m blessed to once again have the opportunity to enjoy being with great friends doing productive work while enriching the lives of others - a perfect example of “Rejoicing in our DAR Ties of Service and Friendship.”

My service has been made possible by the support of my precious husband, Ray, and that of our family. They’ve generously shared me with my DAR work and friends.  I’ll never forget their love and generosity!
