The Service to America Committee was originally introduced as the Celebrate America! Committee in the Young Administration and renamed the Service to America Committee beginning with the Dillon Administration. The purpose is to capture the magnitude of service hours that Daughters regularly provide our communities to demonstrate the positive volunteer opportunities associated with DAR membership and enhance the public’s appreciation of the relevant, dynamic nature of DAR service work.
Sparkle through Service to America!
The Wright Administration has a goal of logging 15 million hours for Service to America! Daughters are reminded to frequently log their meaningful service hours to help us reach this goal, every hour counts! You can log your service hours here: https://services.dar.org/members/committees/ServicetoAmerica. A list of what counts as Service to America hours can be found here: https://www.dar.org/members/committees/service-committees/service-america/what-counts-service-america.
- Participate in the newly announced NSDAR Annual Service to America Project by cleaning headstones and undertaking restoration and beautification projects in local cemeteries. Be sure to receive permission to clean in advance! Log the number of headstones cleaned and cemeteries supported: https://forms.gle/R7jbMLnN4Gs7qZTa6
- Host a Service in Seconds project, another new Service to America initiative of the Wright Administration, at a chapter, district, or state meeting. Service in Seconds projects demonstrate how Daughters can make big impacts in their communities with just seconds of work. Service in Seconds projects should be meaningful, hands-on activities and not simply donation drives. The service should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete. Some ideas include writing letters of gratitude to active-duty military, veterans, and first responders; cutting coupons to provide to local shelters and food pantries; and making simple super hero capes for your local children’s hospital out of basic materials.
- Get a jump-start on honoring veterans as Veteran’s Day approaches by participating in Honor Flight welcomes, serving coffee and treats to patients at a local VA clinic, or collecting and distributing toiletries and non-perishable items for homeless veterans at a Stand Downs event. For a limited time, you can support veterans and the President General’s Project by ordering the new supporting veterans special t-shirt: https://www.customink.com/fundraising/dar-thank-you-veterans-t-shirt. The deadline for ordering is October 8!
Once your chapter has completed your DAR Day of Service activity, be sure to share on social media using the hashtag #DARDayofService and create a press release for traditional media. Also don’t forget to enter the DAR Day of Service and Service in Seconds (if applicable) contests! The deadline for both contests is January 15, 2023.
Help us Sparkle through Service to America during the Wright Administration by participating in meaningful service projects with your chapter and in your community and logging your hours to help us reach our goal of 15 million hours!
