Meet Your Executive Officers - Organizing Secretary General Nancy Wright

My journey began 50 years ago when I joined the Webster Groves Chapter in Missouri as a Junior Member. It had a large group of active Juniors. While still a prospective member, I went to meetings and even paged. I was hooked. I loved the Society, what it stood for, what it accomplished, along with the wonderful women who belonged. I was excited and wanted other people to join and be involved in this great organization.

I have my areas of interest but, from the beginning, I have always enjoyed working on membership. Fast forward to 2003, my husband and I moved back to my hometown of Canal Winchester, Ohio and subsequently transferred to the Elizabeth Sherman Reese Chapter in Lancaster. What I have enjoyed about both of my chapters is the support and friendship as we worked towards accomplishing our DAR objectives.

While serving as National Chair of the Junior Membership, Membership, Membership Promotion Committees, and as State Organizing Secretary and State Chair of the Chapter Development & Revitalization Commission (CDRC), I gained experience in promoting membership, membership retention, as well as working to revitalize chapters, and providing problem resolutions.  Serving as Organizing Secretary General, as well as National Chair of the Chapter Development & Revitalization Commission, allows me to put this experience to work.

The Office of the Organizing Secretary General is responsible for our membership information. We work on the organization of new chapters, membership growth, as well as membership retention. Have you taken a good hard look at your own chapter lately? Do you have members drop or resign, especially ones who have been members less than 5 years? Have you asked them WHY? Interestingly, in a survey sent to those who had resigned, the number of those resigning because they were not made to feel welcome was equal to the number resigning for financial reasons. How many members do not attend?  Have you asked them WHY?  Let us identify these unmet needs and coordinate the organization of new chapters to accommodate women’s busy schedules and encourage new ways to serve our underserved communities. Let us share with them the experience of Rejoicing in our DAR Ties of Service and Friendship!
