Janet McFarland, Corresponding Secretary General

My heart has been with DAR for well over three decades, and it’s my distinct honor to be serving on the Wright Team as Corresponding Secretary General.

My DAR journey started as a Junior in Pennsylvania, and I never dreamt then of the opportunities I would have to serve others and make lasting friendships. After moving to D.C. in the ‘90s, I connected with the Eleanor Wilson Chapter. It’s these women, along with the D.C. Daughters, who have taught me and helped me grow into the DAR Daughter I am today.

Thinking about my DAR journey takes me back to my first step engaging with our Society when I took a state Page assignment. Who knew all the countless hours volunteered, ancestors traced, friendships made, and Honor Flight veterans welcomed that would later take place when I said yes to wearing white! What a thrill it was to come full circle and Reunion Page some 20 years later at Continental Congress with one of my lifelong DAR friends.

I kept volunteering at the state level and eventually served as State Regent, Finance Chair, and Chapter Development and Revitalization Commission Chair, which is when I pioneered the New Members Course that National adopted.

I was able to continue developing the member training courses, including the new Committee Leaders Course, at the national level as a committee chair. This experience fulfilled one of my passions: assisting and guiding others in discovering their DAR journey. Under the Dillon Administration, I also served as one of the four original members of the Insignia Task Force, which evaluated the business proposition of bringing the Insignia business in-house.

As the Corresponding Secretary General, I’m using the experience and knowledge from those two years on the Insignia Task Force to continue building the DAR Insignia Store, where you can find all the pins for your ribbon. My other duties include overseeing the DAR Store, where you can buy chapter supplies, gifts, and various products that support the President General’s Project, Junior Membership, DAR Schools, and our mission.

Patriotism is probably my favorite of the three tenets of DAR’s mission. My heart is with serving our veterans and their families, especially the patriotic veterans who live in our communities and need the support of a smiling face, a warm coat for winter, or an advocate in their corner. I am honored to also serve on the U.S.VETS Washington, D.C., Advisory Board.

I spent my professional life working adjacent to the federal government. My speciality was as an engineer and researcher in the defense and technology industries. I also ran my own business, which made historical books more readily available to genealogists. I’ve been married for 28 years to U.S. Air Force veteran Steven Walters. We share a love of racing our 1964 Mercedes Finback in road rallies across Mexico.
