Meet Your Executive Officers - First Vice President General Virginia Storage

Virginia Storage, First Vice President General

Mrs. Wright has asked the Executive Officers to write a blog post introducing themselves and their role in this administration. As First Vice President General, I will start us off and over the next couple months you will get to meet the other ladies serving with me. We hope this will help you get to know us and what we are planning for this administration.

I was twelve when the Nation celebrated the Bicentennial. That time instilled in me a great love of patriotism and history—really all that our National Society embodies. I was already a member of the Children of the American Revolution then and, when I turned 18, I thought it was important to take the next step by joining DAR. And now, on the eve of our Nation’s Semiquincentennial celebration, I am honored to serve as your First Vice President General as we Celebrate Stars & Stripes Forever!

Having served as Organizing Secretary General during the VanBuren administration, I was fortunate to meet and work with so many different DAR members.  Some were experiencing the very best of DAR by organizing new chapters and recruiting new members.  Others were struggling with chapter issues or personalities.  Regardless of the circumstances, I enjoyed getting to know members that were literally all over the world.  The interactions I had gave me a depth of understanding of our National Society I couldn’t have received otherwise.  I now take into my new position what I have learned as Organizing Secretary General and all the other DAR positions I have held, as well as my professional experience in human resources and administration.

As First Vice President General, I have the privilege of chairing the Human Resources Committee.  This committee works with the Human Resources Director to ensure appropriate staffing, training, compensation and benefits for one of the greatest treasures of the National Society—our dedicated staff.  At last count, 144 staff members provide exceptional service to our membership on a daily basis.  And, as one of the Wright Administration goals states, we should all, “take time to recognize and appreciate our National Society Staff.”  Having worked as a human resources generalist for the past 27 years, I feel right at home in this position.  Other duties include assisting and supporting the President General and revising and editing the DAR Handbook and National Bylaws.

The good works of DAR do not happen in a vacuum and I firmly believe that the relationships one has, both in and outside the organization, contribute to a member’s success in our National Society.  I am most fortunate to have the support of my husband of 30 years, Mark, and my law school student daughter, Mackie, who is a member as well.  I also have the support of an amazing chapter that I have been a member of for 38 years, the Washington-Lewis Chapter in Fredericksburg, VA.  Of course, the Daughters of the Virginia DAR are always in my heart. And all of my DAR friends I have met over the years have provided a wealth of knowledge that I draw on frequently.  I hope I can meet and learn from more of you!

I treasure the fact the Wright administration is one of kindness and inclusivity.  Having almost 200,000 good women from diverse backgrounds - CEOs and stay-at-home moms, women of color, indigenous women, young women, old women, women from every walk of life that all have our organization in common - we have the potential to move mountains.  We can expand our reach and broaden our service, all the while continuing to promote our objectives of Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism.  The possibilities are endless for tomorrow’s DAR and I am proud to be a part of it!
