Let’s Get Down to Business (Sessions!)

Denise Doring VanBuren, President General

Last night’s Opening Night ceremonies were such a thrill - I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I greatly appreciated the warm welcome and gratitude expressed to honorees David Rubenstein, Carlos Del Toro, the Family History Library and the Trust for the National Mall. Their stories and work embody our DAR values of service and patriotism.

We showed a number of terrific videos last night during the proceedings – if you want to missed them or want to rewatch, please click here to watch the video highlight our accomplishments over the last three years, and here for the video spotlighting the President General’s Project benefactors. Additionally, click here to access the E Pluribus Unum website that was highlighted in last night’s proceedings, and here to view the American Battlefield Trust’s American Revolution Experience website.

This morning, we return to Constitution Hall to begin our 131st Congress business sessions. We will hear presentations from our Executive Officers, other reports and important business. If you are a delegate representing your chapter, please be sure to attend our business sessions so that you may return to your chapter to share all of the important information.

I also want to remind you of the wonderful shopping options that will be open throughout this week for all your DAR needs. The PG Project Sales and Junior Shoppe will have tables in both Constitution Hall and the JW Marriot. While you are in Constitution Hall, don't forget to visit the DAR Insignia Sales table, too! Additionally, a wonderful array of vendors participating in the Congress Shops can be found in the Texas Lone Star Lounge in the lower level of Constitution Hall. And of course, the wonderful staff of our beautifully renovated DAR Store on the lower level of the Administration Building is waiting to process your orders!

My day today includes visits to the Historic Preservation Luncheon, greetings with my New York sisters and festivities at the Units Overseas Luncheon! A reminder that you can keep up with all Congress happenings by reading the Congress Herald via the Congress app (instructions to download here) or on a desktop/mobile browser here.

This evening we will celebrate accomplished young people during our Education Awards Night. We will hear the American History Essay winners read portions of their essays and present the DAR Good Citizen Awards. We will also recognize our first Revolutionary War Patriots High School Essay contest winner and the Outstanding Teacher of American History. The All-American DAR Chorus will entertain us with a musical performance. Concluding the ceremony will be the exciting presentation of the finalists for the Outstanding Junior Member contest. Good luck to each of the accomplished women! Be sure to join us via livestream if you aren’t with us in D.C.
