Patriot Records Project Committee Challenge

Gail E. Terry, National Chair, Patriot Records Project

The Patriot Records Project began in 2015. The purpose of this committee is to make finding and identifying Revolutionary War Patriots easier.  Volunteers for this committee work from home at whatever time is convenient for them. They index the names of men and women who fought or helped in other ways during the War for Independence. Each name indexed is potentially a patriot for a future member of your chapter.

The focus of this committee’s bi-monthly articles for the Daughters Newsletter have been motivating members to volunteer for this committee. To further shine a light on this committee and its work as we Rise and Shine for America, the Patriot Records Project Committee Challenge was approved by the VanBuren Executive Board at their February 2022 Meeting to encourage participation in the work of this committee.

The challenge is for states to increase by 25% the number of their active volunteers. An active volunteer is one who enters at least 100 names in a calendar year. The 25% increase will be calculated using the number of volunteers in the state who had indexed 100 or more names in January 2022. If a state had 40 active volunteers in January 2022, their goal is to have 50 active volunteers by May 31, 2022.

Each state meeting this challenge will receive a certificate at Congress. States and their state chairs who meet this Challenge also would be recognized on the Patriot Records Project Committee's homepage during the month of June 2022.

If you volunteered in the past and found the records difficult to read, please see a sample of the types of images we are indexing right now (click images to enlarge). We have approximately one million of these images awaiting indexing. We hope you will consider becoming active again to help meet this challenge.

The names indexed by this committee become available for research by members and the public at dar.org/grs under the Rev War tab. After selecting the Patriot Records Project Index you would enter a name. Note that Soundex is used and the wild card can be used as well.

Once you find a record you would like to view you click on the person’s name and the actual document will appear. This image shows the document that appeared when you click on the third entry for John Whiting.

Any member can volunteer for this committee by going to our committee page on the Members website and clicking Volunteer Now! Alternately, you can volunteer by writing to [email protected]. Send us your name, national number, and chapter name. Vice Chairs Judith Halter or Stephani Roohani will send you the instructions and help you get started. Assistance is available 365 days a year.

Once a volunteer has indexed 10,000 surnames, she will be eligible to purchase the Patriot Records Project pin. Note that you do not need to commit to entering 10,000 names, each name indexed is another name saved from the Revolutionary War era records and will be made available for research. All assistance is appreciated.
