Drum Roll, Please! Introducing the DAR Genealogy Research Institute

Pat McFall, Registrar General and Cynthia Parnell, Reporter General

We are excited to share that our National Society will host the inaugural DAR Genealogy Research Institute at DAR headquarters on May 2-4, 2022.

The three-day Institute will include six classes by renowned genealogists, historians and lecturers. Instructors include Michael Strauss, Shannon Combs-Bennett, Adrienne Abiodun, Victor S. Dunn and members of the DAR Genealogy and Library staff. Attendees will also join American Ancestors/New England Historic Genealogical Society’s Chief Genealogist David Allen Lambert for an enlightening program during our “Tavern Dinner” on Tuesday, May 3. Finally, all attendees will even have the opportunity to join a trained member genealogist for a 30-minute “Brick Wall” research consultation session.

While DAR has hosted genealogy conferences and volunteer training programs in the past, the Institute will be a unique combination of the use of DAR Library collections, the Seimes Technology Center and in-depth training on the online GRS system by DAR staff and member volunteers.

Learn all of the details on the Members’ Website (www.DAR.org/members). Please note that participation will be limited to the first paid 100 registrants; registration will open exclusively to members beginning at noon EST on February 2. (Visit the Members' Website on February 2 at noon EST for the Registration link.) Registration must be paid in full in order to reserve your spot, which will be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. If any remaining spaces are available after February 28, registration will then open to the public. Members will be responsible for their own travel and hotel accommodations while attending the Institute.

And don’t worry: there is plenty of time to conduct your family research and enjoy your Headquarters built into the schedule. Each afternoon, attendees will have the option to spend personal time in the DAR Library, Seimes, the DAR Museum/Period Rooms, the Americana Room or even the DAR Store. On Tuesday May 3, attendees may also opt to join a private walking tour of D.C. All sessions, classes, tours, three lunches and tavern dinner for the three-day event are included in the single registration fee.

All Covid restrictions required by the District of Columbia will be enforced at the time of the Institute, and attendees will be updated as to requirements. The DAR Genealogy Institute is intended to be a companion to the virtual Genealogy Lecture Series currently provided by DAR. The hands-on aspect of the Institute precludes our sessions from being displayed/shared virtually.

We are proud to launch the DAR Genealogy Institute – and we’re anxious to welcome you to not only visit our Headquarters but also hopefully breakdown some of your brick walls!
