Set Goals with the Chapter Development and Revitalization Commission

Mary Frisch, National Chair, Chapter Development and Revitalization Commission

Who’s ready to Rise and Shine for America! The CDRC Team thinks 2022 will be a banner year! We want all chapters to be committed to spreading sunshine in their community. Now is the time to set your chapters’ goals for 2022.  Are you ready? Take the health of your chapter. Do you need a dose of vitamin CDRC? Don’t just Survive, THRIVE! Here are a few ideas from the Team to make your chapter the very best that it can be.

Ginnie Storage, Organizing Secretary General, has this advice on being a good leader.

  • Nurture and educate all members of your chapter. Even those who have been around for a while. Avoid the “everybody knows” syndrome.
  • Make your members indispensable. Ask them if they will take responsibility for duties and projects in your chapter. Show them that their contributions are appreciated and vital.
  • Place value on your members’ talents. Your chapter will benefit from the knowledge that you find within your ranks.
  • Don’t take for granted the value of your members’ time. Make meetings productive and educational.

Patsy McFall, Registrar General, announces the GEP courses can be taken at the reduced price of $75.00 beginning January 1

  • Goods news! Find out about the Legacy Program!
  • More good news! Find out about the Inheritance Program!
  • I emphasize there are many amazing tools made available to assist in the completion of Applications
  • Use the Genealogy Guidelines to address a number of things. Be sure to check the updated online version of the guidelines for new and useful information.

Janet McFarland, National Chair, DAR Leadership Training Committee, stresses the value of training for members aspiring to take leadership roles at the chapter, state and national level.

  • Developing leaders and leadership skills is vital to the growth and stability of a healthy chapter.
  • Good news! The DAR Leadership Training Committee has a new course, The Committee Leaders Course!
  • The course is geared for aspiring Daughters interested in learning how to be an effective committee member, chapter, state, division vice, national vice, or national chair.
  • All that is required to take the course is a current subscription to the DAR magazine (who doesn’t have that!) and to complete the Members Course.
  • The Committee Leaders Course is a self-guided course consisting of learning modules that participants can complete at their own convenience and pace.
  • More good news! Upon completion of the course, you may purchase a Committee Leaders bar to be placed under your DAR Membership Training pin.

Yvonne Liser, National Chair, Membership Committee, recommends that all chapters have a Membership Retention Strategy.

  • Membership Chairs and Vice Chairs should consider creating a monthly action plan for membership retention.
  • Month #1-distribute new member welcome packets
  • Month #2-Invite and engage by inviting members to take part in an event/service project
  • Month #3-Check-in message (keep in touch)
  • Month #4-Emphasize proof of membership value (remind them why they matter)
  • Month #5-Assign a mentor or membership buddy
  • Month #6-Survey to establish level of satisfaction/interest in DAR membership
  • Month #7-Strengthen connection with member-send a personal note, etc.
  • Month #8-Shine the spotlight on the new member-introduce her in the chapter newsletter
  • Month #9-Introduce future leadership possibilities
  • Month #10-Demonstrate the value of membership
  • Month #11-Membership renewal-send dues invoice with a personal note/letter
  • Month #12-Celebrate a successful membership renewal season (have a social event)

Allie Golon, National Chair, Lineage Research,  addresses Sensitive Situations and Conundrums!

  • Staff genealogists have created a presentation to address “sticky” situations that may arise during the Application process.
  • Adoptions, estranged parents and other scenarios for which a simple letter of explanation may suffice.
  • The dreaded Analysis-the genies explain preparation of analysis and when to use one.
  • Visit the Lineage Research Committee page on the Members’ website to view this presentation.

Kathryn Koos-Lee, National Chair, Volunteer Genealogists Committee, has advice on using the Prospective Member Database (PMD)

  • The PMD is a valuable tool.
  • The PMD is an excellent way to evaluate the health and wellbeing of a Chapter.
  • You may even find prospective members on the PMD that would help your Chapter reach its membership goals.
  • Looking at the amount of time a prospective member has been on the PMD is part of an Annual Chapter Assessment.
  • If your Chapter’s PMD is outdated, overwhelming or needs extensive editing, PLEASE consider requesting the help of an Assigned Volunteer Field Genealogist.
  • The Assigned Volunteer Field Genealogists help new member applications thus reducing the number of names on the PMD.
  • Another duty of the VFG is to mentor Chapter Officers on the use of the PMD as a resource in gaining new members.

Christina Bannon, National Chair, America 250! Membership Task Force Committee, has volunteers committed to helping your chapter resolve those pesky AIR letters.

  • The Task Force was established to help chapters resolve AIR letters
  • Task Force members have the knowledge and skill to assist chapter registrars with challenging applications
  • Help is just a “click” away-go to the Members’ website, fill out the form and “poof” a volunteer will appear and get busy assisting you.

As you can see, the CDRC commission is available, ready, willing and able to assist your chapter with all of your membership and training needs and goals. All you have to do is ask. If you have a question or concern, you may contact me at  [email protected]
