"Inherit" Grandma's Patriots Through New Program Launch!

Cindy Nicewarner, DAR Genealogist and Team Leader

After approval by voters at the 130th Continental Congress, it is exciting to share that members now have the ability to “inherit” all Patriots for whom their mothers or grandmothers have a proven Application or Supplemental Application. The Inheritance Project is a member benefit that 1) removes the need to file a full four-page Supplemental submission with documentation for each Patriot and 2) reduces the cost to “inherit” all eligible Patriots to a one-time fee of just $50.

At this time, the Inheritance Project applies only to mothers and maternal grandmothers.  Other familial connections may be considered in the future depending upon the success of this first phase.

How it works

Daughters who wish to inherit their mother’s or grandmother’s Patriots complete an online form and pay a $50 non-refundable processing fee. Inheritance will be established using existing approved Applications and Supplemental Applications. Requests will be processed as time allows, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once authorized, a member will be notified via an automated email and the Genealogical Research System will be updated. Inherited Patriots will be listed on a member’s profile page beneath her existing Ancestors, under the new heading “Inherited Ancestors.”  Participating members will be authorized to purchase and wear Ancestor Bars for all inherited Patriots. Additionally, Daughters will be allowed to wear their mother’s and grandmother’s bars if desired, making them family heirlooms that may be passed down for generations to come.

The electronic form may be found on the member’s website. Click on the Genealogy tab at the top, then choose the Inheritance link; or go directly to https://membership.dar.org/inheritance.  Please be sure to carefully follow the directions for completing the form and submitting the fee.  It is very important that you provide accurate details; any errors in submitted information will delay processing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I pull my existing Supplemental in order to apply for this program instead?
A: No. Current Supplemental Applications already entered into processing may not be withdrawn in order to take advantage of the Inheritance Project.

Q. Will I need to pay $50 to inherit my mother’s and another $50 to receive my grandmother’s Patriots?
A: No. If you request a link to both your mother and grandmother in your Inheritance request, the cost is just $50 for both.

Q: If I have a Patriot for whom my mother never applied, can she “inherit” my revolutionary ancestors?
A: Yes! Once a relationship is established, the “Inheritance” designation goes both ways, with no duplicate charge.

Q: Will new ancestors be inherited if I or my mother/grandmother have a new Supplemental approved in the future (i.e. after I have completed my Inheritance application)?
A: Yes! You will inherit all future additional Patriots once a mother/daughter inheritance link is established.

Q. How do I apply?
A: Complete the electronic application form (https://membership.dar.org/inheritance) and pay the $50 nonrefundable processing fee. It is important to correctly enter the name, date of birth and National Number for yourself, your mother and/or your grandmother.  Any error in these details may result in a processing delay.

Q. One of our Patriot ancestors is flagged within the DAR database. May I inherit that Patriot?
A: No. If a Patriot has service issues or there are lineage problems within the line, he/she is ineligible for Inheritance.

Q. Can I inherit Patriots from my paternal grandmother, sister, aunt or great grandmothers if they are in my direct line?
A:  At this time, the Inheritance Project applies only to mothers and maternal grandmothers. It may, at the discretion of the Executive Committee, be expanded in the future to include other relationships, including paternal grandmothers. Such program updates will be announced if/when they become available.

Q. Is this the same program as Legacy?
No, the Inheritance Project is a new program that allows members to “inherit” proven eligible Ancestors and eliminate the need to file Supplemental Applications. The Legacy Program celebrates a family’s connection within our National Society when the same established lineage is used within three generations when joining.  You may find details about the Legacy Program here.
