Support a Local Classroom with the Community Classroom Committee

Diane Waugh Oliver, National Chair, Community Classroom Committee

It’s been an entire year since the “Boxes of Sunshine” project was launched. A list of grade-based items was created, and Daughters rose to the occasion to support the students and educators in their community by donating countless crayons, notebooks, pencils, glue sticks, scissors, and plastic storage boxes that were purchased for thousands of children nationwide whose academic lives were upended due to the pandemic.

I encourage every chapter to think out of the box when it comes to supporting their local classrooms. Reach out to the teachers in your chapter and school district and learn what the classroom’s needs are at this point of the academic year. Don’t forget to include the art teachers, the music teachers, and the gym teachers. A clean change of clothes would be a wonderful donation for any elementary school classroom as would a gently used and loved, yet no longer used, musical instrument.

The Knickerbocker Chapter, NYC, hosted the Knickerbocker Sunshine Shuffle at a shuffleboard club in the city. Tickets were sold and a link to an Amazon Wishlist was also noted for those Daughters who were unable to attend yet could still participate. The money raised went to support the chapter’s Little Box of Sunshine project.

Our Daughters are beginning to go back into the classroom and volunteer their time supporting teachers and the learning process. Mary Steel shared on our Facebook page, NSDAR Community Classroom Committee, that students in 1st grade in Garland, Texas “recently learned many facts about our American Flag. They held the classroom flag, walked outside to the front of the school to look at the American Flag, they colored the flag and made flag bookmarks. At the end of the day, they received a tiny American Flag. It was a wonderful day of learning!” It's been reported that one very lucky Daughter may find a bookmark, made just for her, in her mailbox nest week!

Mary also noted that she obtained the detailed, step by step, information for this project from the Community Classroom Committee’s Educational Resources list. This is just one of the lesson plans noted on our website that are free for members and non-members to use. As of the creation of this blog, we have 99 approved and posted lesson plans.

Recently, a Daughter reached out to me as she was unsure she could lead this project for her chapter. I assured her that she could if her heart was kind and good and if the project’s goal was to truly help and support the children in her community.

Every donation makes a difference. Continue to support education in your community and remember to be someone’s sunshine!
