What continues to Rise and Shine for America? The Flag of the United States of America!
“Our flag carries American ideas, American History, and American feelings. It is not a painted rag. It is a whole national history. It is the Constitution. It is the Government. It is the emblem of the sovereignty of the people. It is a NATION.” Henry Ward Beecher, 1861
These words from more than 150 years ago still ring true today. Our Flag embodies everything we are as a country. It also embodies everything we are as DAR.
I challenge chapters to incorporate the Flag in all their DAR activities in this new year. It's easy to do. When your chapter holds a community event to honor Veterans, present each Veteran with a small American Flag. When your chapter is making donations to schools, active military or community groups, include an American Flag, copies of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States and/or the American’s Creed. When you present educational programs to schools, start with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and the American’s Creed. If your chapter marches in a parade, feature the Flag in your display. Even if you participate in a cemetery or highway cleanup for conservation, you can fly the Stars and Stripes in a respectful way. The Flag will always make your DAR program or project Rise and Shine!
