Introducing the New Genealogical Records Committee Pin

Nancy Ball, National Chair, Genealogical Records Committee

We all know that adding primary source records to the National Society’s database helps to provide the important documentation that enables prospective members to document their lineage for membership. Founded in 1913, the Genealogical Records Committee’s purpose is to collect and index unpublished records of a genealogical nature and prepare them in the proper format for placement in the DAR Library. Due in large part to this committee’s efforts, the DAR Library is recognized as one of the finest genealogical repositories in the world.

Now, there is a new way to be recognized for future volunteerism that adds those critically important primary source records to our GRS database: a beautiful new GRC pin that may be worn on the official DAR ribbon to demonstrate support for this important committee and its vital work. The pin will be available at the DAR Insignia Store later in 2021, but GRC volunteers may start work toward earning the necessary credit as of January 1, 2021. It is earned through the first 100 pages submitted and may ultimately be complemented by up to five companion bars for additional levels of achievement.

The wide variety of genealogical records that are acceptable for transcription includes Revolutionary War military records; county and town deeds or other land records; marriages and vital records; probate records of wills and estates; court orders or minute books; town council meetings; tax lists; Bible and cemetery records; etc. Participation in this project provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of our ancestors.

Credits are earned for every submitted/approved page after January 1, 2021. Individual credits may be earned for every page submitted -- whether the member is working alone or as part of a group. Want to find out more? Visit the Genealogical Records Committee page on the members’ website, and check for the Pin Tracking Credit Form (GRC-WP-4001), which includes a page to track approved submissions. Once requirements are fulfilled, the Pin Authorization Form (GRC-WP-4000) is forwarded to the GRC state chair for verification. When the national chair has received the authorization, the member may order her pin through the DAR Insignia Store.

Join the GRC in 2021 and beyond as we continue to supplement the research capabilities of our beautiful DAR Library. Our collected records are available to everyone through the online GRS database and at the NSDAR Seimes Technology Center.  It is exciting to be a part of this committee and its work – which can be done anywhere you find a willing member who has access to a computer.

Remember: just one new document may make the difference in a new member Application or a Supplemental brick wall. Please visit the Genealogical Records Committee page for more information and links to our instructional webinars and guidelines.
