Students across America have returned to school, some in vastly different ways as result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. What remains constant is our National Society’s commitment to education and our support of scholarships at the chapter, state, and national levels. Last year in support of education, our National Society, chapters and state societies together awarded more than 1,300 scholarships worth almost $1.5 million. We should all be proud of the impact this support makes in the futures of these young people!
Did you know that more than 7,200 students submitted applications in the first year of our online application system? The National Society granted 83 scholarships to students from 31 states in the areas of education, history, government, law, MBA, nursing, medicine, chemistry, occupational and physical therapy, music, museum studies, English, math and science.
Now is time to begin planning for our 2021 round of educational support. The application portal for scholarship submissions opened on November 1, 2020, and will close on January 31, 2021, at 11:59 pm (EST). The DAR Scholarship Committee uses the Academic Works platform for our online applications. Scholarship applicants will use the portal to submit their applications and to upload and submit all the requested information and documents by the deadline. No mailed or emailed information will be accepted. The online application portal can be found on the DAR public website’s Scholarships page. The direct URL link to the online application submission portal is: http://dar.academicworks.com.
Students will use the DAR’s Academic Works portal to apply for the 28 scholarships offered by the DAR Scholarship and the American Indians committees. Please note, the portal is not for scholarships offered by the DAR Schools nor the DAR Good Citizen committees.
DAR scholarships are varied in area of study and are for graduating high school students, college undergraduates and graduate students. Who is eligible to receive a scholarship offered by the DAR Scholarship or American Indians committees?
- Citizens of the United States.
- Those who attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States.
- Students who provide proof of tribal membership that is recognized at a state and/or federal level for the American Indians scholarships.
Please note that two scholarships require applicants to be DAR members or have a relationship to a DAR member. Chapter endorsement of applicants is no longer required for DAR Scholarships.
New for 2020, the Richard and Elizabeth Dean merit scholarship has an updated focus of study for those wishing to apply—American Studies! Graduating high school students with a 4.0 GPA or higher (or equivalent scale) who will be majoring in American Studies are eligible to apply. An American Studies major or a concentration study may include American history, government, literature, music, art history or culture.
Opportunities for Service – Call for Scholarship Judges
This year’s online system this will require three reviews of each scholarship application. This means that more than 200 judges will be needed to review applications. Do you know an educator; business, community or spiritual leader; family member or friend who could serve as a scholarship judge? If so, please submit the name(s), a brief background summary and email contact information to me at [email protected].
